As usual I parked my shed (old Rover 214, for the tedious daily commute)in our work (hospital) car park. It was fine when I drove it in at 10am, but at 630pm when I went home all was not as it should be. It sounded terrible like there was no exhaust, but it was dark and freezing cold so I drove slowly home, with all the windows open so that I didnt get gassed, parked it near the closest Kwik Fit, then walked home.

Next morning I checked the car in to discover that someone had cut the exhaust system through in two places and walked off with the Cat!!!!!!

Apparently old cats have more precious metals in them so they are favoured by these charming people. What have we come to when people actually steal rusty old exhaust systems from old bangers, frankly are there no depths that these morons are prepared to sink to.

As for me I spent more than the car is worth to replace the exhaust just before Xmas when I can least afford it.....I hope that whatever they smoke or inject themselves with leads to a very painful, lingering and pathetic end............

Anyone else had such a bizarre robbery perpetrated against them (or by them!?)

Thefts of catalytic convertors is nothing new, it's been going on for an absolute age. You have been kind of unlucky though, as they tend to steel them from 4x4's and the like though, as they are easier to access.

Someone I know has just had the DPF filter stolen from his motorhome (Again, easy access I guess) which cost just over a grand to replace.

There is also a roaring trade in second hand airbags apparently - Not exactly what I'd want to carrying around in my pocket, but then scum will take anything that gets them their next hit

Kwik Fit exhaust.....not so shiny!! Apparently newer cats have much less 'precious metal' in them and are only worth about a fifth of the old ones.

They would have had to use a jack.....in a busy hospital car park on a steep slope.

How on earth did they manage that? I've heard of it happening to 4x4s where there's room to wriggle underneath, but doing it to a Rover 214 must be very tricky indeed. Even sawing through the exhaust must have been a difficult job in a confined space.

Unless you had parked with two wheels on a huge kerb they must have equipped with trolley jacks and (presumably) something along the lines of a reciprocating saw. That must have attracted some attention.

ETA: Nuts! Slow typing. I had on eye on Stuart Baggs (the brand) making a truly cringeworthy attempt to avoid the sack. He's still at it...

Rock up in a white van wearing hi-vis coats and I guess most people wouldn't bad an eyelid.

Seems very high risk having all that gear there if they might have to make a speedy exit.

I had someone steel the mudflaps off my peugeot 106! They even undid the rusty screws to get them off neatly. I think they are about £15 from peugeot...

I wonder how long it'll be before thieves start taking lead wheel weights? £1.10/kg for lead at the minute.

I think catalytic converter theft is fairly common (with SUVs and pickups being the main target because they're more often high enough to access the cat without jacking the car up). I'd like to see someone try to nick the Elise's, they'd have to take half the car apart to get to it. hehe
