Well, I have a problem with the dash in the 37 Buick I am restoring.

It has a rather rusty dash and I have removed it and taken off all the brightwork and discovered that instead of the body coloured paint I was expecting to find I have a wood grain effect. its quite nice looking and I now realise I need to repaint this finish in order to ensure the car stays as close to original as possible.

Does anyone know of a specialist painter or person who could re do my dash and the window surrounds with wood grain effect ?

Not too fussed where in the country they are as I can post the parts as they are all off the car now.

Is it a paint or a wood veneer?

I have reveenered a few parts over the years, if it is painted then a decent french polisher should be able to achieve the effect.

Or a specialist decorator, there are a few around here that do wood/stone effects that are quite convincing.

It is a paint effect on a steel dash panel and one the panels around the windows.

How the hell they did it in 1937 is a mystery, it looks lovely where its not rusted away.

You need to find an old school decorator that can do oil scumble.

Contact Hightone Restorations in Oxon on 01869 349003 and ask for Andy. They do that sort of thing, very well.

Thanks for that, I will give them a try tomorrow.

Does anyone else know of any others who might be able to do this ? I would like to get a few prices before I give the job to someone.

ETA: Ahh, its the people doing the ISO restoration that I have been following a bit on here.

I've seen this done with the soot from an acetylene flame and some twigs to drag through it to give the grained effect, then followed up by many coats of slightly tinted lacquer, looked amazing!

Should look like this.....

Might be worth contacting Lance at Romance of Rust in West London (07774754239) as he will probably be able to point you in the right direction as vintage American cars of that era are a bit of a speciality of his.

Actually (and with my anorak right on and done up tight) the car in the pic is a 37 Buick, but, its a two door resto-rod, and although the wood grain effect has been done very well to that car its wrong, totally wrong. It is supposed to be a greyer/dark green wood finish.

I will post pics of the dash as it is now I have stripped it and the sections of good finish I uncovered when i moved a trim piece.

Aah...I know the finish you mean now.....I'm sure there was a Buick with a dash like that parked close to us at the Pre50 AAC Rally of the Giants this year....??

I'd definately give Lance a ring though.
