1988 Jaguar XJS Restoration project
Discussion
Hello there, just thought i would post a few shots of my 1988 Jaguar XJS that i am currently restoring cosmetically, as usual with Jaguars of this age it is riddled with rust in all the common areas i.e sills, floorpan, radius arm mounts and arches. On the other end of the scale, the 3.6 litre straight 6 engine and automatic gearbox are in running condition, although with it having stood idle for 6 years the engine, although running on all cylinders, seems to be running a little bit rough. But i have every confidence that the engine will sort itself out when road legal.
My previous restoration project was a joint project between me and my dad on his 1990 Mitsubishi Starion 2.6, this was another cosmetic restoration, which was finished in late 2006, since early 2008 it has not been used.
And finally, once the XJS is completed, i will be moving on to what could be the biggest project of them all, the resto of a 1972 Jaguar E-Type V12, which will require the engine to be removed and a new gearbox fitted.

Thanks guys, when my dad first brought the E-Type i wasnt quite convinced on the colour, it looked quite dull in the overcast skys. However, when i first saw it on a day when the sun shone throughout the day, i couldnt get enough of the colour, or the sound of that V12! I managed to get the engine running during the summer, however after around 3 minutes it ground to a screeching halt! The engine didnt seize and can be started immediatly after it has stopped only for the same thing to happen again, my dad reckons it the waterpump thats doing it but i am not quite sure, although i am hoping that is all it is.
The Starion has been off the road due to a few things, the clutch was changed around 2000 miles ago and since then the clutch has been chattering away like no mans buisness, while it was on the road it had developed a leak on the drivers side door seal often leaving a 2 to 3 inch pool of water behind the drivers seat, however that was sorted after the moss that was causing the seal to come away from the body was removed
It hasnt been started in about 9-12 months now, but im quite confident that if i chucked a tenners worth of fuel in and put a battery on it would soon fire up. Before it was restored the car sat for 3-4 maybe even 5 years having not been started, all it needed was a battery put on and it fired up first time. So far there are no plans to do any work to it, unless i win the lottery or can get a cheap enough insurance quote on it
Ah well, at least there will be a virtual Starion i can race around in if it is released for Forza 3 on tuesday

Lovely pair of Jags there mate best of luck with the restorations!
Interesting to see the XJS minus it's front bumper - it was never designed to have such large impact absorbing bumpers, that was to satisfy US legislation. It was originally designed to wear sleek chrome bumpers with the indicators mounted in the vallance below the bumper the same as on the E-type. Jaguar never bothered to change the pattern of the front wings until the XJS was facelifted so the pressing for the E-type style front indicators is still there lurking behind the bumper under the headlight!
Quite a different and slightly more 'cohesive' look to the car without the silly big US bumpers.

Does anyone remember an XJS several years ago that was featured (I guess pre- t'internet days) that was built by someone and they fitted chrome bumpers and I think a 4.2 straight six. Did they build it from a new bodyshell? It was some time ago and I seem to recall being very impressed by it and thinking how nice it was (BRG ??)
Anyone remember?
