This type of stuff makes me sick:

http://www.vancouversun.com/Glastonbury+Thorn+fell...

Really hope the vandals are found and hung for desecration of what people believe to be a religious artifact

http://hyscience.com/archives/2010/12/vandals_dest...

Why?

Because it is seen as 'establishment', little tts wanting their puerile actions to have some meaning.
Sadly indicative of the underclass happily expanding in our midst.

This tree was seen as part of the 'establishment'. What time did you start drinking today?

Nope, sorry, you have me at a disadvantage there, Fittster. Could we start from the beginning again?

Why has this only appeared on foreign news sites?

Oh that's right, we're too busy worrying about injustice to poor unwashed students and the Z-factor to care.

spotted this in an article:

comment on article said:
We now know who did it and he revenged the whole town because he wanted to build flats and we opposed the destruction of the hill where the tree grows. So after the sprig was sent to the queen he ruined the tree over night.
Suspect he wont last long

Not a nice thing, but surely people we ought to have a bit of perspective?

I'm going to go a bit Lee from Blue here, but it's "just" a small, old tree - what about all those big old trees being chopped down in various wildernesses around the world? I'm more concerned by the destruction of rainforest in South America, Africa and Asia, compared to a stunted old bush, which by the sound of things, might recover from its pruning.

Thousands of christian, pagans and other people go on a pilgrimage to visit it...

So because you think it is just a tree, even though the Queen herself gets a sprig every year to ardane the royal table at Xmas its fine to chop it down?

Was it you?

I suspect he's got nothing to do with it. It sounds too much like an episode of The Simpsons.

Blimey, he's just suggesting some perspective has been lost here.

And yes, it is just a tree, even if some people believe it came from Gandalf's staff.

It's not the tree that's at issue here, though. People are upset because this tree meant something to them. Wherever it came from is essentially irrelevant - it's a symbol of something which is important to them.

If the miscreants had set fire to a collection of classic Ferraris, people on here would be commiserating and calling for body parts to be removed. But because it's "only a tree" - well, where's the problem? rolleyes

From reading the articles the tree is only 58 years old? Or am I reading it wrong?

Not the point though, vandalism is a stty thing be it to a tree or a car, inconsiderate bds frown

EDIT: daily wail link has this :

[i]Yesterday he recalled watching a tree being planted on Wearyall Hill in 1951 for the Festival of Britain. Although that specimen died, it was replaced the following year and stood firm until this week. Mr Coles said: ‘It’s the saddest thing I’ve seen in Glastonbury. Some of the main trunk is there but the branches have been sawn away. I am absolutely lost for words.’

So let me get this straight, a bunch of people attach significant meaning to a tree and it is to be protected forever as a what piss-take at their mentalness?

It is a tree, just a tree. Not really that important in the grand scheme of things. What crime would the perpertrator be guilty of? "Arboricide"?

Far worse things go on every day, they need to get a grip.

Besides, it's not been felled! The main trunk is still intact and the tree should recover, so all it really need is a prayer circle.

The report saying that the trunk is intact made me think it might be immigrants stripping foliage to sell to people in traffic jams and such for xmas!

I still think it is a big fuss over nothing.
