Hello all,

I have just uploaded a 1 minute or so clip of my car at Silverstone. As you can hear when it corners it gives a terrible noise. It seems to be coming from the brakes and only happens when they are hot and never does it on a "normal" drive or at the start of a track day or when they are cool.

Does anyone agree or think it may be something else? The wheel bearings seen fine so I do not think it is them.

Thanks for any advice.

Have you got different wheels/tyres on for this??, sounds to me like a tyre rubbing, not metallic enough for brakes, i could be wrong though smile

You can just imagine the white GT2/3 driver saying" W The F" as you fly past!

I agree with the post above doesn't sound like brakes squeeling, could be wheels rubbing as the suspension comes under load, or the suspension rubbing against the wishbone's when under load.

Do not know how to multi quote back!

I have 888's on the car and yes they rub like crazy but I am used to that. It is the noise the car gives straight after braking and then into the corner. It only does it when the brakes are warm and never on the road, if I leave the car to cool it will not do it until they are warm so this is why I think it is the brakes.

Hi Mark, no it feels no different at all?? It only happens when the brakes are hot, never at the start of a session or on the road?

Hmmmmm, if you had not said anything, i would say its wheels/tyres/transmission related, it sounds like rubbing, knackered bearing type of noise, difficult without being in the car. Are all your hub bearings ok?
Tell you what, next time your at a track, invite me along to drive it, i will be able to tell you what it is then smile

It does sound a bit like the "shoop-shoop-shoop" noise you get from a knackered bearing. Perhaps it's only apparent when everything is hot and has expanded a little, which is why the bearings seem ok when they're inspected cold?

Awesome lap though, I loved how it just sailed past that 997 GT3 biggrin

Mark,

Thanks for the offer - I will think of you if I can not find the problem.

Pete,

I think I need to do some more exploration

Scotty,

Every lap was like that. There was a photograper just on the corner of the BRDC building as we were using it as hospitaility so me or who ever drove my car that day did the same to get the best photos - screwed the next corner up though. All good fun and always good fun when you have someone in the car with you. That one is probually not the best, I will put some more of the laps up at some stage but this one you can hear the noise the best.

What brakes are they?

It sounds like a distorted disc that as you come of the brakes is then rubbing the pads in the caliper. As you then speed up the pads get knocked back to the point that they then don't touch anymore and hence it goes quiet.

My guess,
if your on standard hubs there not up to it and your cooking your bearings.

From the clip it sounds to me like a sticking piston in your calipers, easy job to remove them and check plus you can check for anything else obvious at the same time.

Thats not brakes, its something rubbing.

still doing it well after the corner apex when car is still loaded up and you are off the brakes.

doesn't sound much like tyres rubbing though...too high pitched. If they are, you'll see evidence inside/on inner wings
Also not engine as the noise doesn't vary with revs. only speed

wind the shocks up 3 turns (5mm) all round and see if it clears. I believe you had Nitrons on a couple of months back, and new shocks and springs will has settled by now.

For my tupence worth, that would be my guess too...it seems to come on worse with prolonged brake application heighting the hub up, I had this at one point, as the hub/bearing over heated it allowed the hub to move/float on the bearing. If i backed off for a lap and allowed it to cool down again i could push without it happening again unless i pushed it for too long.
I've got brake/hub air ducts now and since then I've not had the hubs get so hot that i can't touch them any more.

Have you had the wheels off since? Have you got too tight a clearance between caliper and wheel and is caliper shaving a high spot in the wheel casting/inner rim?

Or is it a bearing issue which allows side movent in the rim when hot which allows rim to contact the track rod end or something?

Agree Andy. Sounded more like metal to metal, exhaust rubbing on a drive shaft?

Get it up on a ramp, , wheels off and set about looking for witness marks. Drive train - starting at the back and moving forward to the gear box output. Those would be the areas for my preliminary investigations.

Could be the discs warping with the heat temp changes.

My money's on overheating one piece discs or floating discs that are no longer floating.
