'Shanty towns' in the USA
Discussion
Last year there was a report in the news about people who were unable to live in a house due to job losses etc forming 'shanty towns' with tents on the outskirts of the major cities (Found the article linked below). Is this still happening and are these 'Tent cities' growing?

We have exactly the same things here though? Try visiting one of the main salad growing town in say Lincolnshire or Norfolk. Plenty of immigrant workers living in tents and squatting on abandoned buildings. Mrs Vx's home town of around 25k people (south lincolnshire) has an estimated 150 people sleeping like this.

I didn't know
When I worked in Herefordshire the farmers supplied large barns and warehouses for the fruit-pickers to live in, but I had not seen tent-towns.Tsippy said:

That has always been a part of America. This is a society based upon merit, self reliance, and a bit of luck. Not everybody wins. Edited by Jimbeaux on Saturday 11th December 16:14

America was always the land of where you went to prove yourself and to try to make it big
Nothing wrong with that, and for some people that is perfectly fine
They encourage and reward a bit of effort over there. if you are prepared to go to work everyday, you will do quite nicely!Nothing wrong with that, and for some people that is perfectly fine

We're actually thinking of a move out there in a couple of years, just waiting for the partner to get the necessary experience in her job
(mainly going for the cheap fuel, cheap houses, huge meals and the ice hockey
)
I'm waiting to see how the whole financial mess and political issues in USA sort themselves out over the next few years before seeing if I want to try getting there.
