why change a winning format ?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula...

I like big v8 and v10's with 18,000 rpm

F1 will never be a green sport - so why change ?

be nice to see another turbo era, hopefully be as exciting as it was before.as i remember then it was 1.5liters but they were mostly v6 engines.but I think this emmision/green stuff has gone a bit far now if it gets to f1.what next 500cc single cylinder with a 300w electric motor.

Do they? Have you actually heard one in the flesh? No way would I say they sound bad...

When I first saw this thread title, I thought it was a joke.

If F1 goes 4cyl, it'll really hurt the sport.

What annoys me is that there's lots of other areas where we aren' being 'green' (for example, when that A380 engine failed, the aircraft had to dump fuel for 1hr 30 mins, which is worse).

F1 is meant to be the pinnacle of engineering and performance, not 'green'. :@

I suspect a V4, not an in-line 4??

IIRC in the last turbo era Lotus gave up on the in-line 4 due to torsional vibrations.

Which is why others went for V6 layout.

Mind you they were pushing 1500BHP for 1500cc back then!

Sounds interesting and pushing the technology again, which is why I like F1 so much!

About time Williams were back up there, so lets hope!

No they don't sound bad, but I miss the howl of the V10s, they sound better in the flesh and on the TV.

Agreed, the old V10s did sound pretty unique, and exceptionally loud in the flesh!

The thing is these days, the engines rev to such high rpms, that it sounds almost turbine or electric motor-like. Not really my cup 'o tea tbh.

That's not all though and I quote.....

"Formula 1 cars are set for more radical changes in time for 2013 as bosses look to make the sport more efficient and potentially more exciting.

Cars will have much smaller wings and specially-shaped underfloors designed to generate downforce differently.

They will use 35% less fuel and be a little slower but more challenging to drive, although passing may be easier. "

This is going to be really really bad......

i think this isnt gonna be good - how can a 1.6 4pot be the pinnacle of motorsport? how can it be the best? nissan now make a 1.6 4 pot petrol turbo in the juke - think it will be a straight swap? maybe nissan will jump on board and hae a play with the big boys... :O)

i dont think this is a bad thing. all road car technology is heading torwards this format and formula 1's involvement will only be a good thing. this technology will filter down through the tuning and motorsport ladders and soon mitsi evos with a 1000 bhp will be common place. with the power levels remaining similar racing will still be just as good. just will sort the men from the boys trying to hold on to it when it comes on boost

I thought one of the arguments used to shift to V8's was that manufacturers like Ferrari and Mclaren wanted to link them to their road car models.

Can't see the newest prancing horse being sold with a 1600 4 pot somehow smile

The price of Silverstone tickets will stop me going long before this is introduced. Seems to be getting more expensive year on year, for a less and less exciting weekend.

F1 has been in decline for a long time. If you want a fun day out go to a hill climb, a rally stage or a local track day. You'll see variety, skill and fun plus the whole place will be chock full of genuine car enthusiasts.

F1 has long been the most overrated, overpriced and frankly dull form of motorsport. The great mystery is how its bubble has kept going for so long, it reminds me of one those TV shows that starts with a griping first season and then dies of embarrassment somewhere along season three before finally being axed some time after season seven with only a few TV geeks being actually able to say how long the show lasted.

The shame of it is that it doesn't have to be this way. Just look at those ancient films of the Auto Union V16s, does that that look like a great show?

A move to 1.6 fours will seal its fate.

Personally I'd like a return to formula libre or (we can always dream) some bizarre rules that allowed supercharged v8s to compete with monster flat 16s or allowed turbo charging but only with one camshaft per engine and no wings, front engined cars but with unlimited aerodynamics or V twins with absolutely everything unlimited beyond that...
