Thread size?

Can someone please tell me the thread size in the base of cameras used for the tripod etc.?

I don't know the exact size but I think it is a one size fits all. I say this as my father gave me his old tripod which must be over 30 years old. My brand new camera fits perfectly onto it.

The standard size to connect tripod to camera is 1/4".

You might find 3/8" mentioned but this is usually to connect the tripod base to the tripod head.

That is the diameter but does not define the actual thread.
It may be UNC, Whitworth, etc. I'm pretty sure it's not metric.
