E60/61 M5, mods and warranty?
Discussion
Currently the E61 is stock / standard but I'm toying with adding a couple of minor mods. My question is, will it void my BMW/Mondial Warranty entirely or just the cover on modded parts? I'm only looking at getting a pulley kit, scoops and a map so its not like I'm changing anything massive.

Hi Eddie!
I've been told that, strictly speaking, any mod will void the warranty.
In practice, however, I believe that only the modified part, or anything that goes as a result of that, is not covered.
It really does vary from dealer to dealer, with some being far more sympathetic than others, so it pays to get to know them and have the conversation about this. They want your business and will usually do what they can to keep you with them.....Subaru were just brilliant for this in my Scoob days!

M5 Mark is the boy to ask about this.....there's no stopping him!

Hope all is well with you
Eddie, no problem here at all with the mods, I was a little worried to start with but my dealer has had no problems at all with mine and mine are all very obvious! The oil cooler and headers are a dead give away obviously. It even took them a little longer to replace the starter motor (I think) because the headers. On another occasion after doing a software download and collecting the car they told me I would need to get it remapped and remove top speed limiter again!

I think it is pretty clear that if you modify your car it will void the warranty. Anything you get done on warranty will effectively be out of good will. My experience of the BMW warranty is that it is very good so I would expect that BMW will still honour the warranty for most things, however should your engine catastrophically fail requiring $$$ to repair I wouldn't be too confident of being covered ... It's a risk at the end of the day, you pays your money and you takes your chances.

Are the exhausts not the same on the E60 / E61?
No apparently the rear beam on the 61 is different to the beam on the 60, and something about the fuel tank position too. Its quite obvious though when you park the 60 and the 61 side by side. The 61's exhaust comes down lower under the beam. God knows why they were built so differently in that respect. Maybe it was //M having to rework the weight balance of the E61 due to the extra fat!Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
