(Splendid Saturn V picture)
Anybody hazard a guess as to why the first stage is obviously very cold at the surface, whereas the second and third stages don't seem to be (using the same cryogenic fuels)?

possibly the liquids in the tanks in the first stage are cooling further as they expand into gases to be burnt.

The first stage of the Satuirn V was fuelled with Liquid Oxygen (Lox) and kerosene (V2 technology just made bigger).

The top two stages were properly cryogenic with Lox and Liquid Hydrogen.

A pretty spectacular image considering it was taken in November 1966.

Project Orbiter.

The unmanned Orbiter missions were designed to photograph the moon's surface in unprecented detail in order to ascertain the best places for the Apollo manned landing which were still 2 to 3 years in the future.

The shot is an oblique view acros the crater Copernicus.
