It might be ok, but I would not be brave enough, £1500 will see you a nice mid production one.

It must be worth more than that just to break it for parts - the interior would get most of your money back by itself.

Of course, if the 540i badge is in the wrong place then don't bother

Check out the sotw thread, someone has just spotted a 4l tourer for 750, it makes the original sotw look a tad overpriced.

I just sold my early 540i for £800. No leather but it had done a lot less miles than that one. Good cars if you can cope with 20mpg.

If a good ones start at £1500 it'd have to go really wrong before you lose out. Particularly if you can do some work yourself.

Yep, this is one of the very few cars that make me want to wish my life away, so I can be 21 and insurable. Always look like a phenomenal amount of car for the money, and in fact, E38 740is even more so - they seem to come in cheaper than a like-for-like 540i. Though I'd probably still end up with a 5 because if I tried hard enough I could find a manual..

Anyway, dreaming aside, I'll add support to saying that if you spend a bit more on these, you'd be much better off. A 4.4 for less than a grand is nice, but a lovely facelifted one for less than two is worth the difference, IMO

I always consider the sellers house when looking at such cars. Looking at those pictures, you can't imagine the current owner periodically throwing £££'s at the car as and when necessary. Maybe it's just me.

was 20 the average ? What would it get on a motorway cruise?

Yes, average. I struggled to get over 25 though even on long motorway journeys. It was an auto though - I imagine that the manual is a bit better.
