Automatic Kick-down Question

Just bought a 1998 E240 automatic and the car drives really well. I tried the kick-down today (didn't try it on test run)and it seems to hunt for a gear (takes a while) and once it's found a lower one it revs up to about five thousand revs but will not change up. Worried now that something may be on the way out and it could get expensive any ideas? Also the sport change works well without any problems so it only seems to be the above.
