Its a 2000 model 2.5 boxer engine, has started to overheat to the point that it fills the header tank with coolant then blows it out as steam if you continue at moderate revs. If the heater is run at full it seems to run ok. Have flushed the system and replaced the thermostat but makes no difference.

Are the fans actually kicking in at all...?

I presume you have unplugged all the connectors and check the connections are clean...?

Have you had the fans off recently and put them back on the wrong way round !

On Imprezas you are told to feel the top & bottom radiator paipes are hot, and if they're not it should tell you where abouts the coolant is getting too. I forget which is which though.

The fans are definiteley coming on, need to check if both top and bottom hoses are getting hot.

I parked it with the front slightly raised up by a couple of inches and was able to add another litre of coolant and it seems to be fine now, took it out for a long test drive, including some fasts motorway driving, and the temp gauge kept rock steady in the middle position.

I read something about a slotted bung on the LHS of the radiator that can be used to bleed the system but couldn't find it, anyhow just the last top up seemed to do the trick.

I think the trouble with these engines is you don't realise the coolant level has dropped until it starts over heating, checking the level in the header tank is no use at all and its very easy to think you have filled it up enough and have an airlock in the system.
