It's based in/around the Balkans conflict. Not exactly a conventional war.
And it's a fillum.

One of this films I have mentally filed under 'ste' but watch whenever it's on and ways enjoy!

The nasty chap with the sniper rifle reminds me of the local £5 car wash guys. That's why I'm ways really nice to them. Probably Serbian war criminals!

because he's special, a mercenary perhaps. He must have been cold and wet in those clothes.

BEL is pretty good in places, with some excellent aerial cinematography, and some of the technical military detail is very authentic/realistic.
Shame the good bits are hidden in amongst a load of Hollywood popcorn fodder, like Owen Wilson sprinting through minefields, getting mixed up in the conflict on the ground and then leaping through the air to catch the hand of the only irritating character in the entire film.....that stupid "Hoo-ahh!" Marine.
The Eastern-Bloc Elvis fan gets my vote. Comical, yet quite believeable.

I'm confused. When it came out in the cinema it appeared to be a knee jerk reaction to the Iraq war and "how great is the American army. Look we don't leave any man behind". The characters were dire (Gene Hackman's especially), the scripting was is horrendous coming across as if it's written in a hurry, the acting and direction isn't that great, the action sequences are contrived and overall just don't look that good. On top of all of that whilst as I like Owen Wilson's stuff (I Spy is brilliant!) an action hero of this ilk he is not.

Are we talking about the same film?!?

hehe well yes, there is that. Granted it may be difficult to be a knee jerk reaction to a war which hasn't started yet, BUT it was i tell you! It was the Afghanistan invasion I was thinking of, not Iraq!

In reality it couldn't have been filmed an into cinemas that quickly, but it certainly felt that way at the time.

I love the hi-speed photography snippets - they aren't over-used but when used, really effective.

The 1st mine going off and the sped up part when the sniper cocks his rifle stick in my mind.
