job interviews do's and dont's

hello
since being made unemployed last december i am finally getting some response to attend interviews.My only problem is ive never really had one just walk in jobs.how is it best to be in an interview and answer questions such as
"why do you want this job?". i can't say beacuse i'm desperate to work
"can you tell me a bit about yourself"
i am not the worlds best in these situations and would really love some advice

Do what I did, Went for an interview with Russells construction, a quite large construction firm, but was late due to an accident on the motorway.
I had rung ahead and let them know I was going to be late, and duly turned up, to be met by who I thought was a chap named Roger, I introduced myself, but he didn't. Half way through the interview the question arose of staying away, 'No worries, I have a decent tent' was my reply to a completely blank face, Obviously I was joking. I proceeded to make poor jokes all the way through the interview.
Upon completion, and the subsequent exit, he handed me his card and said call me if you have any issues, to which I replied 'Thanks alot Roger' he corrected me and said his and name was Daniel Russell (I think, few years back)
Hmmmm, I think Russell, I recognise that name, I looked at the card upon leaving and realised he was the Head of constructions and son of the CEO.
I got offered the Job, and declined, and they head hunted me a while later.
SO maybe just make a few jokes and act yourself, certainly never lie. Always be friendly and have a smile and a firm handshake, research your company as well, and current project they are working on.

Wear a suit no matter what the job. Look as though you could start today if they asked.
If you are a smoker avoid having a smoke before arriving.
Know your CV and dont BS on it becuase they will probably ask questions about the stuff you told BS on. Dont lie in the interview either.
Do some research on the company so you can ask them about the upcoming blah blah.
Questions like "Why do you want the job?" are not there to trick you. The answer is largely irrelevant, they just want to see how you think on the spot.
