Fuel Price Misery For Motorists

Unleaded hits record levels - and there's worse to come next year

Petrol prices hit a record high last week, with an average of 121.76p being charged for a litre of unleaded fuel.

There's more to come, too. According to price monitor, Experian Catalist, we can expect further rises in January in the face of higher VAT and increased fuel duty. VAT is expected to add 2.5p to a litre, while the fuel duties will add a penny.

There is some good news, however. Those who use the black stuff still have a little way to go before the cost of diesel hits record levels - the current price of 125.73p per litre is still eight pence down on its record of July 2008.

Suggestions for the reasons behind the high prices include the recent cold snap causing disruption to deliveries, and the price of oil - about $90 per barrel is a record high for 2010.

According to the AA, motorists are having to pay an average of almost £6 more to fill an average tank compared with the start of the year.

Why is it that fuel is going up due to the vat increase? Yet when vat was reduced the duty was put up to keep fuel at the same price. Makes me sick

I was desperate for diesel on sat morning and paided 129.9p/l, was a little upset when it was 120.9 2mins down the road at asda, not sure I would have made it though.

Its shocking the price of fuel these days, I would say demos in the capital would be the order of the day but probs not a good time for that.

Will it not go up by more than 2.5p when VAT goes up?

2.5% increase on £1.20 is 3p. + the extra 1p on duty is then has 20% VAT added to it due to the tax on a tax.

Round up 4.2p to 5p as you never see anything other than *.9 at the pumps.

I wouldn't be surprised if we're paying over £1.30 per litre by the end of next year. What would surprise me is if the government is able to restore my patriotism before the end of next year, before I'm officially sick of this country and everything it stands for (or doesn't as the case may be) and pack my bags for somewhere else.

As we've already paid income tax on the money we're using to buy the fuel (unless you're Philip Green), shouldn't that read tax on a tax on a tax?

Went for a little trip yesterday - as I got on the motorway fuel gauges starts flashing at me. I thought that's okay there's a texaco right next to where I'm going. 129.9p/litre - suffice to say I put the minimum in required to get me around and will fill up elsewhere where it's 5p cheaper around here. It's been 124.9p in a lot of places around Porthcawl/Bridgend. Need to go further afield to get it around the average.

Fuel tax is just a poorly disguised income tax, the government wouldn't be able to sustain itself without the billions petrol and diesel bring in each year.

There's not much point as they are running out and guess what, we have our own oil fields! Yep were being ripped off by our selves. Great to be British!

That's not quite how it works. The £1.20 already includes VAT @ 17.5%. So to get the new value you need to divide by 1.175 and then multiply by 1.20 to get the new value, which is £1.22.5. Not a huge difference here, but when you start to look at new car prices it becomes significant.

Mass protests didn't stop Gulf War 2 and isn't likely to stop the increase in price of going to university. We should probably just bend over and take it.

Last time fuel prices were this high there were blockades and protests, now we just accept it. In fact I believe they've since made it illegal to blockade fuel depots under anti-terrorist laws. Meanwhile the oil companies post record profits every year and the government uses the motorist like a mobile ATM. What a crock of s*it.

Why do we seem to be the only country in europe that pays more for diesel per litre than petrol? we are getting shafted.

To add insult to injury, the motorway services shaft us even more by raising their prices further still. These days I'd rather drive off the motorway & find the nearest supermarket pump. If everyone stopped filling up at services surely they'd have to bring price down so it was at least comparible.

Wasnt VAT on fuel frozen at 17.5% when it was dropped to 15%? Now its being put up to 20% to fund the short fall because it wasnt dropped?

Its beyond a joke, I wonder how much the govenment earns of all its incomes and where it all goes? didnt they say they were going to publish that kind of info?
