Triple time and a day in lieu? Nice work if you can get it

London Underground (LU) drivers have voted to strike on Boxing Day in a row over pay.
The union Aslef said LU was insisting 26 December was a normal working day but the union wants its members to receive additional pay.
It said staff should be compensated for working at "highly unsocial times".
But Transport for London (TfL) said a long-standing agreement covering staff working arrangements on Boxing Day was in place with all trade unions.
Aslef wants triple pay and a day off in lieu for drivers working on 26 December.
According to the union its members voted 9-1 in favour of industrial action which threatens to disrupt travel for football fans and Christmas shoppers.
Aslef general secretary Keith Norman said: "It is painfully obvious to any reasonable person that Boxing Day is not an ordinary working day and therefore it is no surprise that Aslef members have reacted in the way they have."
A TfL spokesman said: "It is disgraceful that Aslef should try to hold Londoners and London Underground to ransom in this way.
"LU has made every effort to resolve this issue with the Aslef leadership, which has refused to attend talks at Acas to discuss its claim for triple time and a day in lieu for its members."
Tube services have been disrupted in recent weeks by a series of strikes in a separate row over jobs.

Didn't something similar occur last year ? With the railways ?
An employer decides that because we have "carry over" holidays, that the 26th suddenly becomes NOT Boxing Day, but a normal working day, squeezed between public holidays - where the 27th or 28th is fictitiously called Boxing Day.
The 26th December is Boxing Day, any other day is holiday Monday or Tuesday?
It has been Boxing Day for years, irrespective of the actual day it falls on.
Whatever existing contractual terms are in place should be abided by, by both sides. It is just another phase in the continuing battle of terrible industrial relations between LU and the unions.

I do not mean to offend anyone who does this job, but it's not exactly skilled is it? So why not train up a new workforce and get rid of the current militants within the system and get them on sensible pay rather than the silly wages they're currently demanding?
They should ask companies to make 1% of their workforce available to act as a transport reserve. It'd probably take 3 days a year for training / refreshers and then they can be made available as required. I wouldn't mind and I'm sure my employer would rather give up 1% for a few days a year than 50%.http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/dec/13/bob...
"If Bob Crow were a business leader, he would probably be celebrated as a great British success story. Since taking charge in 2002 he has increased the profits of his shareholders year on year, even through the most testing of economic times, while expanding his business by 50%. By nearly any measure you care to choose, Crow is far and away the most successful leader in his field. And yet he is widely regarded as a national disaster."
