Just wondering what are some good tracks to take the MX5 on?

I'm not a fan of the whole topping out in 5th, high speed doesn't bother me.. So the MX5 is quite good at this, it does corners quickly which I prefer.

Its no slouch but its not going to do too well on high speed tracks, I'd imagine. I've not done any tracks yet but will do some in 2011.

What kind of track suits the MX5?

Airfield tracks are great! Check out MotorsportEvents.
Colerne is especially suited to MX5s. Abingdon is also excellent but the straight is a bit longer (I can reach over 110mph in mine).
Other than that:
Brands is a bit open and boring for NA but enjoyable enouggh.
I've never liked Castle Coombe.
Rockingham and Silverstone Stowe are supposed to be good.
The old Anglesea circuit was superb and the new one is supposed to be fun.
Donnington is good but you need to be brave as it's pretty fast.
Llandow is more fun than it looks.
Cadwell is supposed to be the Mutts - I really need to get there some time.
I really like Beford Autodrome but others are less keen.
Knockhill is great too - very much like the old Anglesey but as it's in Scotland you are less likely to go there from Surrey wink

Does that help?

Cadwell in the wet.

An absolute joy in the wet smile

Brands Indy maybe worth a look, plus in the spring summer MSV do taster sessions for £25 for about 15-20 minutes on track. Well worth it in my opinion, especially on your way home from work smile

So far I have only done Snetterton, Bedford, Cadwell and Oulton in my Roadster. Cadwell and Oulton are more obvious circuits for the MX5 as they lack long straights, but to be honest I had a great time on all of them. Also, circuits like Snet and Bedford are ideal for novices as there is much more run off when you get it wrong!

I'm looking forward to Snetterton next year with the new in-field section, a few twisties is exactly what that circuit needs.

In my limited so far experience I've done Anglesey a few times. Coastal Circuit layout. Half is pretty flat out with fairly long straight and a few fast corners where you end up waving a fair few faster machines through but the second hilly twisty bit is where you make it all back with nimbleness. Corkscrew is good. Oh, there is loads of run off as well.

Donington is awsome, fast but with masses of run off if you get it wrong.
Cadwell even better but a little tight for novice track day drivers.
Oulton another fab track.........
Croft a little flat but good fun.
Mallory becomes boring after the first hour.
Brands not the biggest/longest track but good fun

Airfields, Well they don't do it for me, Heavy on tyre wear, not proper corners (cones)

Take a look on Mazda-on-Track web site or Mx5nutz

All the best and enjoy your track time.....

As a first try though, especially as you are down here in the South, I'd say a good 1st time on track would be 31st Jan at Brands with Mazda on Track wink

<Looks around, wife isn't watching so strolls in> So... hypothetically, if I was to come along to one of these track-day malarkeys, how much would insurance for the day be? </strolls out again, whistling>

Your own insurer (if a specialist type), may also offer cover. I'm sure some people have cover available on their road policy for ~£50 a day (cheap). But that would have to have been arranged when you took the policy I'd think.

Thanks Lazza!

I may leave it until February hoping it'll definitely be a dry day as I don't feel very confident in it in the wet really.

Is that the normal amount of people, 60+? Surely you musn't get too much track time?

Why not come to brands as a passenger and blag some rides, meet people, get a feeling for what goes on....

Your welcome to go out in my car.

Should be ok. Personally I only usually do 20 mins on track followed by 30 mins or so resting.
