Looking at installing a system for the dining room (approx 5x5m). Probably CD only is enough and expected use would be as background for parties, dinners etc. Will also include a wireless link from the main system in the lounge. Budget around 1000.

I've not listened to much recent equipment in this area but a few notable items under consideration are KEF Q300 speakers and the Marantz CD6003 player. I reckon a 20wpc amp would be enough.

Any other recommendations for components that would be worth a listen to?

In all honesty, your budget seems very high for something that is just background music, have you looked at one of the Denon mini systems? Probably sufficient for background music.

Initial thought was to go with a minisytem like this. Listened to offerings from Marantz, NAD, Denon and Yamaha. TBH I felt than none of them was musically articulate. That was why I reverted to a separates approach.

Find an Arcam dealer and listen to the Solo Mini with a range of speakers.
Ok, it'll have a tuner too but could be useful.
If it's not to your taste, a dealer will be able to help with the separates approach.

Eta, my dining room system, a few years old now, is a Teac Reference 300Mk11 with Monitor Audio S5 floorstanders. Might be worth listening to the Teac systems too.

Try a Meridian F80, compact stylish box, fantastic sound for something so small. The F80 has been discontinued now replaced by the M80, so deals are to be had. Lightly used second hand units and some ex-demo machines at your budget (just)

Brennan JB7 might fit the bill ~ has had some great press. Very discreet and you can easily archive your vinyl on to it too.

Have you thought about Sonos? You could put at S5 wireless speaker in your room (approx £350) and use the rest of your budget for creating other zones and/or a NAS box. I have an S5. It is very musical with decent bass and it's portable as well.

thumbup Yes, it's a thoroughly convincing piece of kit. Especially with a pair of Epos M12 speakers.

I may have gone overbudget....

Hth, you've not gone overbudget, merely finding best value,(price is not a true arbiter of satisfaction).
Now, your thread about which speaker cables? smile
