Hello All
I can usually been found on the TVR section as i have a Cerbera Speed 6. However, a new job calls with a company car allowance instead of a boring Company A4 diesel and so I have decided to go for an E39 M5 as a daily driver!!! Wife is very pleased - not! I have convinced her it will be perfect for when we have kids!!
So I want to spend up to 10K and definitely want the facelift version
Have seen a very nice looking car at Holmwood BMW Enfield plate no M5 GOE. Anybody know of it? It looks great in the pics
www.holmwoodmotors.co.uk
Mileage is higher than I would like but the paints looks great as does interior. Book is apparently all stamped up and inspection 2 just done.....
Am I mad? If they have a very nice looking 02 530d on 18 inch parallels (god they look good on those rims)
I could afford a E60 (not M5) but the looks just dont grab me
Your advice please gents!

Is the allowance 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles then 25p? Or is it a set monthly figure with fuel card? If it`s the latter you`ll get caned on BIK taxation. If it`s the former it will cost you money every time you got to work.
I run an M6 on the 40p/25p but it`s really just a bonus as I`m a Director. This all hinges on mileage and structure, a little more info needed!

Its flat 40p per mile for business usage only. That does not include daily commute to work though. Not interested in fuel card, fully expensed petrol as it screws you on tax.
Commute to work is only about 15 miles round trip so happy to do that
Bit of a perk really and nice ot be able to choose my own car. I looked at a lease job but dont want to pay nearly 20K over 3 years and have nothing to show for it
Anyone know the car I mentioned?

Hiya
There are quite a few UK based E39 M5 owners who do indeed use them as daily drivers. The initial question I'd like to ask you though is;
Will you be responsible for the maintenence and upkeep of the car as well? or, will the company scheme cover that as well? - I don't know too much about how these schemes work as I've never worked in a position that required one.
The daily drivers/owners I know of, use them extensively and rack up the miles, from what you've mentioned, it sounds as though it won't quite do so many miles, either is fine, so long as that all important maintenence/preventative maintenence is carried out. If it isn't, and something does fail, be prepared for some hefty bills. There are indeed some fantastic M5's out there, and after many and extensive chats with owners of E39 M5's here in the UK and over in the US, it's the usual case that you should get the one that's had full evidence of an extensive service history - and those ones are more than £10K, usually quite a bit more - so factor that into your evaluations.
I know some owners where 'relatively' inexpensive maintenence has been done and the M5 is running well, but these examples are much rarer.
I'd suggest having a good thorough readup of the M5board.com where this question has been covered many times before, also over on BMW5.co.uk again, where many UK M5 owners regularly post up and has also been covered
Get a good example, maintain it well, and theres no reason it'll go way beyond 200K miles - just like plenty of US examples have done!
Lastly, I'm very envious as well as I NEED an E39 M5 in my life asap as well!
Good luck , Cheers, Dennis!

It works like this - basically the company I am joining will give me an extra 10K a year on my salary instead of a company car. Means I am taxed on the income side of things but will pay no company car tax.
I am responsible for buying the car and maintaining it and they will pay be back any business mileage at 40p a mile.
Am not really expecting to do a huge amount of business miles with this new job - only from Midlands down to Heathrow for business trips at least once a month.
As I said, the car appeals as a daily commute an a bit of fun for the weekends. Mileage wont be massive and I am happy to pay a bit more for a good one. Cant see depreciation being a massive problem.
All the feedback I have read seems to point to the car being brilliant at pretty much everything!!
Cheers
Simon

That does look a nice car but its a buyers market so look at as many as you can to get a feel for what you need to be looking out for. I always said the toys wouldnt bother me but mine is fully loaded and Im glad I have them so you might as well get the best spec you can.
I use mine every day (6miles eachway) through stop start traffic and the car is fine with no problems at all. I also use it for business and see 22mpg on a long run but this is at a steady 80-90mph. I get 18mpg day to day.
They are briliant cars and the only downside is the high fuel coss but for the performance and comfort factor its worth it.
Mine has 173K on the clock and still pulls like a train. I got it for a good price but have spent a lot on it getting it perfect (full InspII, pads and disc all round, clutch, tyres, bushes etc). Make sure you leave a couple of thousand spare because regardless of how good the car is there is a chance that something will need doing.
Mine was on the original clutch at 165K when I brought it. I changed it for peace of mind but it was still OK. If they are looked after these cars just go on and on. Where are you located? If you are near to Reading you are welcome to come out for a spin.

OP, sorry I dont know the car in question but do have exactly your situation.
Albeit 6k per annum, but 40ppm flat rate. I run a 2001 M5 and have done 40k in the last two years. I find that it breaks about even, given a gentle right foot as much as possible I can achieve 27mpg so on V-power I just about break 20ish ppm. QED each fill up doubles in value when repaid by employer. Its not quite that simple but I justify it like that in my mind!
I love my car, genuinely do, and as such almost enjoy to lavish money on it. But do either keep or rapidly save a small war chest. Rear Tyres nigh on 200 bob each. Clutch, make sure its been done recently circa 700 to replace, services 200 and 400 respectively.
Some say as a work vehicle its a little dated, I disagree, its almost a classic car but with modern comforts. They are an acquired taste in so much as most do not know what they are. Always fun destroying A4 diesel reps and even after the two years I still get excited at the opportunity of driving her, I was in Manchester finishing an appointment at 10pm last week, almost 300 miles home and I still took the longer winding route over the last 30 miles!
No car even for twice the price is so capable of long distance comfortable, fast blasts, or makes you smile when leaving a meeting and you have 300 miles to drive!
Buy it but for gods sake keep it standard, these chaved up ones are breaking my heart.

Humpapackmainiac..
Nice writeup there, and I know exactly what you mean about driving the longer twisty route back ! I do the same in my E39 530d Touring!!
I've not seen 'chavved' up M5's, ok, there are a 'few' out there with what's to me, a dubious wheel design choice, but nothing 'chavved' up as you say!
What constitutes that in your book ?!
OP - good luck with finding the car and running in for a daily! I'm still envious!
Cheers, Dennis!
