I put petrol in .......(OK - I'm a pedant)biggrin

Book says 95 should be OK for normal driving.
And use 98/99 if you are intending giving it the beans.
So I split the difference, and use Sainsbury's Super unleaded - 97 RON.
It's also the cheapest high octane fuel I can find!

Shell E10 91 octane because I can smile 98 Shell if there is any opportunity of finding a BMW, Porcshe or fezza on the road (Not too often here in Aus !).

Always V power. Unless I only got 10L to go and not a Shell garage in sight, then I will go for the super unleaded in the nearest petrol station.

Its a struggle around my area to find V Power any more.
Normally V or Tesco 99.
In Germany you can get Ultima 102 Octane from ARAL Stations.

I only use 98 ocatane or higher unless I'm running out of fuel and I can't find any in which case I put in enough 95 octane fuel to get me to the next petrol station

TVR recommended 98 to me, but because I live at 300m above sea level said 95 is fine.

ANd according to the Net that's a fact! E.g. "I do most of my driving around home at about 6,000 feet elevation or above. But at this elevation, 85 octane gasoline performs about like a 91 octane gasoline at sea level. So, unless your vehicle has a turbo charger, you are OK burning lower octane gasoline in the Mountain West."

For the rest of us the gen advice is "There is a misconception in the street-racing world that high octane fuel will make your car go faster or run better. This is simply not true. The octane rating essentially rates the fuel’s resistance to knocking."

Here's a site for example:

So Shell's advertising of V-Power is claiming something untrue?
http://www.shell.co.uk/home/content/gbr/products_s...

I'll let the readers do the trawl for the Fifth Gear test of premium fuels in various road cars.

Always goes in my Tuscan and gets my vote.

Doesn't the manual recommend 95 Octane though?

Could you safely use it?

I use the premium one at the moment but, as others say, there are fewer garages selling it now.

Yes, the book says 95, as does the sticker next to the filler.

the best i can find, normally BP ultimate or shell v power, but if i cant get any close by i put enough 95 unleaded in to get me home / to nearest shell/BP.

Cheaper fuel *can* sometimes increases detonation, so best avoided as its a trait not uncommon in s6's

It isn't just the Octane rating that's important, it's the addatives in the fuel that help it burn efficiently, keep the injectors and engine cleaner and help reduce acids that destroy the engine oil. The 'Majors' spend heaps on research and their own addative blends - yes, they actually have laboratories. The supermarkets do not have laboratories and they can't buy the addative packages from BP, Texaco or Shell.

It's Shell V Power for me every time - in the Tuscan that is. In the LandRover, the Porsche Cayman and the Mini it is Shell 95 RON fuel.

Phil.

When I had my last Alfa I did a bit of writing down of mumbers, cost and mileage and it turned out that the higher octane fuels paid for themselves and then a bit extra.

I haven't repeated it for the Tuscan but it was enough to make me never consider bog-standard unleaded, winner all round I reckon.
