I am thinking of upgrading my discs for the drilled and grooved type as the car is mostly used for trackdays however i have read mixed reviews about these with some people saying they are not worth the bother. Anyone had any experience with these discs ?

Do you have any issues with your standard discs?

As you know, the thing that limits how well you stop is how well the tyres grip the road.
If, on the track, you are getting problems with brake fade, then going to drilled / grooved discs may help solve that. Otherwise, I would not bother.

Out, of interest, are you running standard pads? Does the car have any other modifications?

No experience of grooved drilled disks. However with standard 1.8 disks I'm breaking later and harder with no problems, than everything but some caterfields on track.

Don't do it. I had some before and hated them. I stick with uprated pads and stock discs now - much better braking and pedal feel and a hell of a lot cheaper. In fact I use the cheap MX5 Parts pattern discs, they are fine for track use and when they wear out they are cheap to replace smile

Been using greenstuff pads which i find ok despite what a lot of people say about them. As they are now at the end of their life am goint to replace with yellowstuff and thought i would change the discs as well if they would offer any improvement.

the only difference you'll notice from the grilled / grooved discs is that they'll eat your pads a fair bit quicker. if you want to improve your brakes, get decent pads, new brake fluid and maybe braided lines

I've been told that if you go to Yellowstuff on the front, you should stick with Greenstuff on the back, helps prevent the rears from locking.

I don't know where you heard that or where the logic comes from.
Personally I'd avoid Greenstuff and that is from my own experience, not forum rumor - they fell apart on the front and ate the discs on the rear. I have Yellowstuff all round at the moment but I won't be using them again, I'll be going back to Axxis ULT. Superior in every way and not much more expensive.

As said above, the std discs are fine (even the Ma5da Racing boys use them without issues) but EBC pads are shockingly bad. Just fit some decent pads such as Carbotech XP8 (expensive but sensational) and decent brake fluid and away you go.

MX5_lazza - where do you get Axxis ULT pads from? I was thinking of swapping my worn out standard pads for Yellowstuff but I don't think I'll bother having read this post.

I always got mine from Phil at Performance5 but Steve at 5 Speed also do them and might be easier to get hold of.

I'm sure most people will be happy with Yellowstuff if they are upgrading from stock pads or the likes of Greenstuff but if you have experience the likes of Axxis/Carbotech/Mintex then you'll be less impressed.

If you want some extra braking performance, I would (and have) do the following;
1.8 discs and carrier upgrade - you can use your existing callipers
Axxis Ultimate pads
Braided hoses
Either a strut brace with a master cylinder brace or a stand alond master cylinder brace itself
decent fluid

This will give you a great pedal and is cheap.
