We have bought a Z3 1.9 and although it absolutely on the button in every other aspect it fails to reach normal operating temp and the heater emits a barely warm stream of air no matter how long it has been running.
My feeling is that the thermostat is u/s and was wondering...
1.If this is likely to be the case.
2.How trick a job it would be to replace the thermostat.

Thanks in anticipation.

Regular failure of thermostat and not too difficult to replace to fix. Temp should go to and stay at middle of guage.

Sound like the thermostat as you suspect. Not a difficult job, will require coolant to be drained and then bled once thermostat is replaced, and that's about it.

Z Roadster forum may well have a piece on doing the job.

I had the same problem on my 318iS. New thermostat from BMW (£25) and about half an hour of fitting it has made the heater nice and toasty again. Temp rises to the middle of the gauge now and just sits there.

True, but I had the same symptoms above. New £25 thermostat fixed it. They are heavily damped in the middle though - I bought an oil temp gauge for my 318 to keep a better eye on things.
