How to put camshaft back in

Advice needed, I'm just doing the tappets (on my 4.5) and got to the stage of putting the camshaft back. Is there a trick to this, the lobes are longer than the studs so its difficult to get the nuts in place to drag it on.

I've had mine out and don't recall having had this problem. Can't you turn the cam to a position where the lobes cause less of a problem? You'll have to set up the timing afterwards anyway.

There doesnt seem to be a position wmore than about 60 degrees apart so there are always two under tension. At the workshop manualspecified removel position this is a couple in the middel. I got the first cam back in by making a strap to drag it on evenly but I'll see if there are any other options once I get to put the second cam on.

If I remember correctly, on the even bank you put the cam in so the rearmost two lobes are on overlap, with the odd side cam it's the front two lobes that are on overlap. You should then at least be able to get one cap on, tighten that slightly, then get the next cap on, and so forth.

Thanks thats more or les what I did. I got the rear cap just one then made a bar to go across caps 3 as the two tensioned valves are each side of that then pulled it down gradualy to get the other caps on. I just wanted to check I wasnt doing anything too wrong.

The AJP rebuild manual describes a 'cut out journal' to initially fit the cam. From the picture it looks to have a significant amount of material removed so that the studs will protrude allowing the cam to be pulled into position with the nuts.

Thanks, so the question is where do i get a copy of the AJP rebuild manual, I havent come across that before.
