My m57n E46 330d 53 plate touring would barely start in a very cold morning. It was start and then die, start and then it would rumble, revs would bounce then after 15 seconds all would die down and be sensible.

So I read the codes and saw the glow plug unit needed replacing, so fair enough , I replaced it along with 6 new plugs and cleared everything.

This morning, -5, perfect, the ultimate test.

Engine did the same, no difference whatsoever :/

So I ran a fault code. The indy says that the flap thing is a hose or vacuum or something and is most likely his fault, so he will sort it on Monday. But why is there no difference in starting up? Is something else the issue?

Its the last 3 that are the main concerns.

When I had similar problems with my E46, it was an issue with the Throttle Valve position causing the revs to idle irregularly and then stall. Not sure whether this would be the same symptoms as you're getting, but mine was caused by a split in one of the vacuum hoses.
