I found this website a month or so ago:

http://www.cbrd.co.uk/c-roads/what.shtml

It is about C roads, that, for those that don't know, are those roads which are referred to as 'Unclassified' on maps. It is most interesting and hopefully will help you guys find sound roads around you're areas.

CBRD is a marvellous website, and one in which I can lose hours and hours.

It's one of my bookmarks. I love the virtual motorway tours.

Anyway, here's a C road:

So this means no cameras etc I take it?

What are the surfaces like on these 'unclassified' roads?

I couldn't weigh up what was so special about these. From the posted it link it would appear that these unclassified roads are just normal known, named roads that don't have a number assigned to them.

I was hoping for some kind of WWI super secret byway only known to the most senior members of dad's army or something to that effect. The sort of thing that Time Team would cream themselves over.

My fault though, not the first time I have been suckered in by this sort of thing. A few years ago there was an article in the local paper about the town centre "orbital" making it onto some kind of register. Delved deeper into it and it turns out that the "orbital" is just a bunch of local roads that connected to each other and someone declared it an "orbital"

I guess in their world they don't come across many town centre roads that intersect any others. rolleyes

I know what you mean bud, I too was hoping for some secret short cuts and what not, all they are is a list of unclassified single track roads which are still used often and well known within local areas. It might help you to find some roads near you of interest though.
