Planning on going from Oxford to Devon on Sunday - is it at all doable?

What methods of transport are you hoping to take?

by car - across to Cheltenham, down the M5 to Tiverton and then across to Devon

You may struggle on the motorways (if one berk drops a bk, you're all fked), but if you can take the non-motorways when they're blocked then you shouldn't have a problem. I've been all over the place today (not in a 4x4) and not had a problem.

If you're sensible, the main problems you'll face are other drivers and abandoned cars IMHO.

What car btw?

Cheers

Zero snow either tonight or tomorrow in those areas so no problem - care needed where there is ice/slush but no more scaremongering please.

The A40 from Northleach to Andoversford is closed by 15" of snow, Cheltenham pretty clogged up by all accounts as well.

M5 is ok at the moment but with a big - temperature tonight conditions may have changed by tomorrow.

I would suggest A34 South from Oxford, M4 west to Bristol then M5 south may be a better route.

Not too bad for the job tbh - front wheel drive, weight over the driven wheels etc etc etc.

Good luck anyway dude.

I'd wait and see what its like in the morning, or at least wait for it to warm up a bit before attempting to leave. We've just come down the M40 thinking it would be clearer as its a motorway. Although lane 1 has had a plough down it, its sort of clear of snow but its sheet ice underneath. Can't say I enjoyed the drive one bit to be honest, certainly an eye opener and just glad to make it home.... I'm not convinced we had all 4 wheels pointing in the same direction for the whole time we were on the motorway. As the moose suggested it actually felt safer on the side roads as they were compacted snow which at least gave some feel.

So you think your wheels have been pointing in different directions silly keep off the roads and dont try and advise other people please, who may have some sense.

Apparently A34 around Oxford is still screwed.

Silverstone to Oxford yesterday
A43 South of Brackley, jack-knifed trucks causing issues so went via Hinton in Hedges
then via Middleton Stoney, could not see the road
A34 was then solid due to other idiots
Oxford Ring Road - OK but avoided the inclines

Return Journey
A34 - Rubbish,
Back roaded to Middleton Stoney, Idiots at Cross Roads (so we stopped made a couple of snow angels, watched then blasted off home)
M40 Flyover, no traffic towards Silverstone, some off duty copper suggested it was blocked as we went to prevent us going around his 4x4 - past him and plain sailing home to get the neighbours VXR8 out smile

Thanks snoopy, I'm pretty sure the OP values your useful contributions to this thread. As for me I'm off now (walking, as I wouldnt want to venture on to your roads again in case it upsets you) to go and surrender my driving licences as someone on the internet told me to keep off the roads...
Why shouldnt I offer advise to someone who asked about the state of the roads near Oxford, having just used (at the time) one of the mainest roads near Oxford. What was so wrong with that? You have no idea why I was on that road, you have no idea how I was driving and you have no idea about the state of the road conditions at the time so not sure quite why you feel the need to suggest I dont have any sense.

Anyway, once again, thanks for your useful contribution!

OP, I hope, if you do travel, you get to your destination safe and sound.
