First job interview for 30 years plus.

Question is. Do I wear a suit a suit and tie or not ?

What is the accepted dress these days? I am worried I may overdo it for what is a comparatively menial job, for which I would not have to dress smartly at all.

I would suggest suit and tie. Always safer to "dress up" than "dress down".

I think Soovy has given some good advice on interviews in the City. I work in that part of the economy, but regardless, if I were to interview elsewhere I would wear the same dress code (assuming of course this is an office based job - if you are going for work as a brickie, ignore me):
Dark suit (navy, dark grey or black if it isn't completely plain - you'll look a bit funeral), freshly pressed.
White shirt, pressed, double cuff, plain cufflinks.
Dark/conservative tie that matches the suit. If the suit is plain, then a subtle pattern or stripe. Patterned e.g. pin-striped suit - plainer tie.
Dark socks, which cover you legs when you sit down.
Black, polished, oxfords or brogues.
Only jewelry that should be visible should be plain watch and, if applicable, a wedding ring.
