My car is currently garaged while I finish university, and I may be mad, but reading the stories of driving in this weather and seeing the pictures of adventures into the country looks like fun and is REALLY making me miss driving.

Kind of a pointless thread, but the thought just popped into my head as I was browsing; I really can't get involved with any of the snow related banter grumpy

So, who loves the challenge and enjoys driving in this weather?

Agree...

See my mate on Facebook saying he was stranded up a country lane with nothing but his 4 foot 11 gf to push him out. Combined with those on PH saying that Volvos are useless in the snow so did the obvious thing to do and go rescue them...

With so much confidence as to go in the shorts and t-shirt I had wore to the gym!

I tow catering trailers in my business, that's hair raising in the snow we had today, A Toyota hiace RWD towing a 1200kg.yikes but business is business.
My daily transport, a VW Caddy, is V good in the snow, FWD and has TC. I enjoy that but I won't and don't have to drive the Lotus in this weather, too much of a risk for me, others will do so and shout about it too.
I like your Renno, I'm tempted by this: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2268991.htm

I found the commute was brilliant. Everyone else stayed at home so made it to work in record time!

I've just been enjoying it for what it is. Trying not to stop and having fun trying to move up an icy hill from standstill then watch the cabbie behind me 'try' and do the same.

Plus taxi drivers!

Cheers, it's a great car. I can't wait to get it back in July when hopefully my insurance has reduced slightly as I'll be half way to 23 by then.

That's a nice 197 but it's expensive when you can get this this 200 for an extra quid, and the 200 is the better car.

I love it. My Peugeot 106 is pretty good in the snow if I need to get anywhere, and the big heavy RWD Volvo 940 is comparatively hopeless. But boy is it good fun holding big long drifts at about 15mph in the volvo on deserted snow covered country roads.

It's also fun playing the how fast can we go without going fast game- going up through the gears and spinning the wheels to over 100mph whilst still only travelling at walking pace.

You are missing out!

driving in this weather is more fun. you don't get much chance to do it, coupled with the slippery conditions you are always buzzing and kept on your feet. In a possibly strange way, I also get the same rush when I'm very low on petrol, and I'm trying to do an economy drive, taking into consideration gradient, traffic, and traffic lights >_<.
that.. and when I'm driving around with someone asleep in the car >_>

I`m in exactly the same position, I`m back for christmas and being home with no car it really annoying. especially in the snow, i loved it last year in the snow and having a car with the heaters on full whack was a lot better then walking to work like i have to now. I`d give anything to be able to afford the insurance right about now...... best of it is neither of my parents will drive in this weather because they keep sliding here there and everywhere, where as last year i was the one who drove them.

I keep hearing stories about people being in trouble so I got a bit worried and started thinking about buying a 4x4, then I had to go out... doesn't seem as bad as people make out (skinny tyres, FWD, 1.8 litre engine). It's actually interesting to drive for a change; just be careful and plan ahead (apply more observation than normal) as slamming on the brakes won't have the desired affect in terms of speed or direction. hehe

I tried this once, then wondered what happens if the wheels doing 110mph suddenly find grip? Do you get F1 style acceleration or does something go pop?

It would never grip enough to break a driveshaft or anything, you'd just spin the tyres on the tarmac if the ice/snow ran out until the tarmac slowed the engine down or the tyre went bang if you kept the boot in.

Fantastic way to potentially smash a variety of transmission parts rolleyes
CV's and universal joints don't take kindly to shock loads.

That was pretty much what I thought, no idea what would break but I was certain that there must have been some parts that would give up if the tyres found grip while spinning very quickly.

I don't think it'd be that bad, no different to locking a wheel under braking surely?

I'd be more concerned about the effects on an open diff, since the speed differential left-right would be far in excess of intended use.

Feel for you mate. All this talk of travel chaos, I've just slowed down and carried on. As long as I can get up my drive it's all good. Well except trying to go through a ford the other day, both the entry and exit were solid ice so I couldn't get up the other side. My fault for poor route planning though hehe

See this is the kind of fun I'm talking about! I'd have a go at that on purpose if I had a car I didn't care about so much biggrin

I love driving in these conditions. Have been going back and forth to work along country roads, lots of snow etc and no slides or hairy moments, it's fun keeping the car under control whilst still making progress.

The only problem is watching idiots approaching junctions to the road you're using, with their wheels locked up and sliding along into your path with a worried look on their face...
