I found this quite amusing.

Complaint said:
****,

I have a complaint to make about the charges which I have accrued when cancelling my policy with XXXXXXX.

When I called to take out the policy I asked if the refund I would get would be in line with what I paid out for the cover as I knew I would be selling the car in the near future.

I paid £700 for the cover ****, which I thought was over the top anyway due to the cover only being for 1500 miles per year, but I had to pay it so I could take the car to the garage to get repaired and I "knew" due to the phone call I had with your operator that I would get most of this back.

Now I wasn't expecting the refund to be Pro-Rata for the month that I had the cover, I was expecting a charge for cancelling the policy early. I had the policy for just under 1 month, it was almost exactly to the day.

Now, £700 over 12 months is £58.33 per month, like I said I expected a charge, however, my refund is £389.82, that means I was charged £310.18 (44%), which equates to just over 5 months cover for a car which I didn't even use during the 1 month I had cover for. I would hardly say that that is fair and neither did the operator from the FSA think it was fair either, hence the email to you following their advice.

Please acknowledge the receipt of this email in the next 7 working days and please advise what you will be doing about this charge as I'm sure you realise that charging £310+ for 1 months cover for a car that sat in a repair shop the whole time (apart from driving the 20 miles to the garage) is an absolute disgrace by anyones standards.

Regards
XXXXX
I hope you do too.

Not laugh out loud amusing, but more facepalm shaking of the head amusing.

They should have asked for a full refund as they never claimed for anything.

1) not really that amusing, I'd struggle to give it 1/10

2) the above is rubbish. You were on risk for a month, you should have read the small print on cancellation before signing up. You don't get a full refund because you don't claim, Insurance doesn't work like that I'm afraid.

What he said. I paid £5 to insure my car for 24 hours so I could take it to the dealers as it was being sold.

could he not have just insured then drove it to the dealers then cancelled immediately for a full refund under distance selling regs?

As above, day insurance.

I once had a problem with insurance which I cancelled after a few days. Sureterm Direct thought it was ok to charge me an £80 "admin" fee for the pleasure. After I wrote to the FSO a couple of times I received a nice letter from Sureterm accepting my overly reasonable £20 + pro rata cancellation settlement. I'm sure I read somewhere it costs them £500+ whenever a complaint is taken up by the ombudsmen.

Looking back I should have pushed for something fairer (to me) same as these aholes to to us.

Bloody hell BSR. Are you really having to resort to digging up three month old threads just to take the piss?

Or have a I missed an agenda here?

Find Letters of Complaint more effective then email.

Also I would not get arsey in my first letter to them, only if they start messing around.

I find most companies if you right a polite letter usually gets sorted quicker than an arsey email.

As I know who I would want to deal with.
