Temporary German Plates and a Factory Collection
Discussion
Stopped on saturday by Lancashire Constabulary for having Temporary plates on my factory collect Porsche Cayenne. They said that I should have put on UK plates at Dover along with the RFL disc. The car was bought through a dealer in Liverpool, and they registered the car in Manchester on the previous Tuesday. This was the day I collected the car from Leipzig.
They threatened to impound the car as they claimed they could not determine whether the car was stolen or the proceeds of money laundering. In the end they let me go with the car. The temporary plates were due to expire in 2 days time. Can anyone give me a view on this?
Surely Kent Police were remiss in letting me through the Chunnel, and Porche GB should have made this clearer?
I believe that the watchword is 'resonable efforts' to put the UK plates on with the tax disc/ The Porshce dealer was closed on Friday for the weekend as we passed by on Friday

Don't see the problem with them checking the car over ref being stolen, but who would put funny looking foreign plates on a stolen RHD car? As for proceeds of drugs money they've clearly just been on a course or something.
Probably more concerned with putting the frighteners on to make sure you get the UK plates on ASAP so you can be caught by scameras etc.
Aside from this I hope you're enjoying the new car.

Point out to the tempory export plates include insurance & its registered in your name in germany.
You should have an ADAC insurance document, plus the German Farhzreitgrief (sp) which is the reg doc.
The plates have a towns stamp & an insurance cert on them.
Tell the police to read up on European road laws, its all perfectly legal.

I've once passed UK customs with a German temporary (yellow field, last five days) plate, and of course the stopped me, and had a closer look.
Technically, you're taxed and insured on these plates, as long as your insurance (the one probably Porsche sorted) allows going abroad with them.
However, that doesn't mean that foreign authorities have to approve these plates. Many neighbour countries from Germany officially tolerate them though.
The official and legal way to export a car on wheels are the export plates with the red field. They are valid for six months iirc, but cost loads more than the yellow ones.

Sadly, a few people do put foreign plates on a UK LOS Vehicle and as a result, they are a good stop.
A lot of people do take the piss by keeping import plates on too long.
Obvioulsy it gives them the right to park where they like, speed where they like......and basicallly do whatever they like (save on road tax and Ins).

BiB telling you a load of old bo**ox.
You are allowed to drive to your home address or vehicle licencing office on temp foreign plates (supposed to be by most direct route).
Even if the vehicle is UK Registered?
On the other hand,if you were stopped driving home from the port then thats not too good and probably why they didnt take any further action......but if you were simply driving it around for pleasure mthen we would all agree thats different.

You can actually drive to the Licencing Office with no plates if its for SVA testing as an import.

Yes I was driving the car around for the purpose of showing my daughter the vehicle on the saturday afternoon.
The Porsche dealer was shut for the weekend. The BIB were then making noises about not using the car until it had the proper UK plates and RFL disc. Can't quite see the problem if Kent constabulary don't perceive the temporary plates as being problematic.
I managed to organise this to-day and am now legal?
The ever so vigilant Lancscon officers kept me questioned in the back of their new Range for 50 miniutes and they were quite polite. They explained that certain individuals bought RHD cars in Germany and brought them in to use for 6 months approx on full German plates after ensuring that they were not liable for German VAT. Wind the oddometer back and then sell them as new after making no vat contribution to the UK authorities.
My only regret is that they never bothered to aplogise to my daughter for keeping me in the Range for so long with no information.. I still like our BIB though!! They could have determined I was genuine after showing them the Sales invoice, photo licsence and the brochure from Porsche about the Factory collect programme. It should really have only taken 15 minutes max!!
The Cayenne T is awesome and perhaps they just wanted a closer look?

You can legally drive from the port of first entry to a place of off-road storage without tax or registration plates - the only requirement is that the vehicle is roadworthy and insured.
After that you need to keep it off-road until it is registered and taxed and has plates, except for driving to/from an MOT, SVA or place of rectification for those tests. You cannot egally drive to the DVLA office in the car that is to be registered unless it has been summonsed for an inspection.
After doing some research I have found all those are based on law and there is no "grey area" in driving your car from the port as people had told me - it is enshrined in law.

Your local BiB are talking out of their arses! A german customs plate is valid until the day stated on the plate and BiB can do ferkall about it. Only then, when the car has been legally imported (did you do the paperwork at the border? VAT declaration!) must it be registered in GB. If you preregistered it on GB plates then you should have had the GB plates on it already at Zuffenhausen!!! and the only way to do this is to get all vehicle details beforehand to the registering authority.......
I've just done this with a camper van.
The car is deregistered (second hand) from the German DVLA, it is given a temporary German V5 & corresponding export plates. (same a s new car would be)
Therefore it's a German registered vehicle still until the expiry date on the plate in red on the r/h side of the plates. The plates also indicate the insurance is valid up till the expiry date.
As far as I know you can drive the car where you want anywhere in Europe on these plates until the expiry date.
Who says the car is to registered in the UK?, it could be registered anywhere.
Obviously is the plates have expired than thats a completely different story.
