Appears I will be spending some time there on and off next year.
Being reasonably well travelled, I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I know nothing of this country and even had to look it up to find out where it was. At first glance, it looks quite a stunning place but would be good to get the inside track from anyone that's been.

Some mates play rugby for Luxembourg and went to Baku to play an international ... and most of the Azerbaijan team were massive Welsh roughnecks who work locally in the oil industry!
Sorry, but I don't have better info other than,
- Baku's like Baghdad, the shot up bits you see on TV
- the w
es are cheap

As mentioned...nothing like you might expect, but very expensive these days. There is a large expat community with the bars and restaurants to support such. Also a lot a of western shopping to be had from designer shops (high end) right down to Mcdonalds!
If you are going to support the oil industry, your work mates will know all about the night life etc. Just be warned of going to the "dark side" !
