Best in the snow - manual or auto?
Discussion
Agree on manual as it just gives you more control.
Reminds me of a BMW auto I had many years ago. Stuck in snow, predictably. I just left it in D with the engine running, got out and shoveled the snow from around the wheels. The car just drove forward on its own, a few inches at a time as the snow was cleared.
I don't recommend you try this. I was young and wreckless.

auto is more dangerous i find as when braking at slow speed in D it is more likely to slide as even though braking wheels still have pressure on them to turn.
However, an auto is better if you are stuck completely as put it in D so wheels are turning (car stuck at this point) then go round back and give car a push then when car starts moving run to the drivers seat and hey presto! Maybe not the safest but gives onlookers a laugh

No that was not me. I'm a bloke and it was about 18 years ago in an E30.Why didn't the couple taking the video just go out and help the girl? That's good neighbours for you.

A good few years ago jeremy clarksons Motorworld went to Iceland and all the big tyred jeeps/vans they used to climb glaciers were autos..the reason being the wheels never got the opportunity to completely stop rolling as drive was continuous and therefore reducing the risk of the car becoming stuck - drive effectively stops when you press the clutch in a manual...dont know if this just applies to overwheeled monsters with snow tyres and perhaps we need drive to stop when in traffic....

I think the fact these glacier-climbing monsters are automatics is coincidence, to be honest. It's because they use massive American-type V8 this and that engines.
Which are inevitably automatic.
I don't think it's through choice.
