fuelling problem?

hi all, im looking for some advice here. i just bought a mk3 mondeo tddi, and the car seemed fine. 126000 on the clock and it ran with no problems, after a couple of days it seemed to have a slight miss, nothing serious though. left house yesterday and after about half a mile it started missing quite bad then lost power wouldnt rev then cut out. seemed like a fuel problem so i put a new filter in it today started no bother took it for a run and same thing happened after a couple of miles. tried to bump start it as i was getting towed back and it eventually started and ran only briefly. took filter back off and it was dry.i took the lift pump off at the tank and tried to wire it up to a battery to see if it would work, but nothing could this be the problem..........jim
