I have a clutch issue on the LR. Need to fully press the clutch down for it to engage, there is hardly anything there. Is it likely to just need adjusting or does it sound like a new clutch? I need it over Christmas in this weather!

If this has happened relatively quickly it's probably the master cylinder, as the cold weather can cause the seals to go hard. I take it that there is fluid in it?

Someone will be along to confirm, but I think that you can check by clamping (using the correct clamp) the flexible hose - pedal should be rock hard, if it isn't the M/C is faulty. Probably worth changing the slave and flexible hose at the same time.

At least it's easier to change than the clutch, although this will be no consolation when you've lost feeling in your fingers!

As previously said if it is the Master cylinder then change the slave too as the increased pressure from the new master will show weakness in the slave quickly as I have just found out. Mind you I had to replace the master cylinder again within a couple of weeks as the replacement was allowing air in.

Defenders / discos suffer from the pushrod bending or pushing through the clutch fork. Its a well known problem and strengthened forks are available.

Yes the gearbox needs to come out to fit a new fork.

I would change the master and slave cylinders anyway if you are unbsure how old thay are, as they are only about £25 for both, then put in clean fluid and bleed well. This will ensure this part of the system is OK. If that doesn't work, you will need further investigation.
