The 4.6 unit is based on the alpina unit so gives it a bit more ooomph!

You also get a few more goodies as standard & m5 style clocks with warm up lights & obviously sports suspension as standard.

There are many more things, these are just off the top of my head & i have a 4.8is which i am pleased with & believe there is not too much difference between the two.

They are thirsty though so you will get to know your petrol station cashiers well!!!

Good luck with your search.

Keep an eye out for the following, worn rear subframe and front thrust arm bushes, both available as a great replacement from Powerflex, frozen door catches stopping the doors stay closed, worn/warped discs, squeaky tailgate, FSR faulty which internittantly kills the battery, pixel failure in the displays, awful runflat tyres, weeping camcover gaskets, slow electric windows which WILL have a mechanism failure if not repaired whilst they are still working.

Other than that and the fuel costs (18-22 mpg) its a great car.

Yes must admit looked at getting 4.8 , but out my price range (just) they have air suspension that i fancied!
Are they good cars in general as i normally have sports cars but need the room & 4 doors now! dont mind fuel as have diesel golf for running about.
cheers

Dont forget to make sure the tyre pressure sensors are working-its a quite unreliable system when its a few years old and the sensors cost around £100 per corner. You will see a message on the dash display saying "TYREPRESSURE CONTROL INACTIVE" if its not working.

Also make sure the tyres have some tread on them-they are 20" and expensive to replace with something decent.

The more toys you have on the car, the more there is to go wrong. I do not have tyre pressure sensors so no worries there. Yes, I really like the car and it is nearly as good as my e39 540i I just sold but more practical and is pretty easy with the speed ramps everywhere.

Totally useable in the snow and I would not swap it for a 4.8iS or the later E70 as these are far more expensive to maintain and much less reliable.

what year is your one then? do you have 4.4? Sounds like they will be quite good for me & kids then? I wont use it lots so mpg is not important but i want something thtas not sluggish as my old ML merc 3 petrol was okay to 60 then the next bit to 85 was so slow when overtaking!!!

hi mate, yes its a really nice car & i am used to my tvr but the x still puts a smile on your face when you floor it.
Its practical & a nice driving position & yes the air suspension gives a comfy ride even on 20s.
Good that you have a run about aswell as this will help with fuel,i have just sold my runabout so i do miss cheap running costs but couldnt justify 4 cars when only 2 of us! & the missus gets the diesel cos she does high miles.
I feel you will be really happy with a 4.6is cos they tick all the boxes.
All the best looking for one & the sound is addictive!
Hope you get a good one.

Yes sounds good! I see from your name you have tvr. I looked at one a while back (again because they have seats in back, even though small!) so you have the best of both worlds...
will keep looking as in no rush, so would like to buy a good one.
