Video: BMW 1-Series M and E30 M3

Eleven minutes of fast BMW fun

BMW has released an 11-minute video of footage comparing the new BMW 1-series M with the legendary E30 M3.

This is good, because the new 1-series M has got to be one of the most eagerly awaited BMWs in many a long year and, well, it's always nice to see an E30 M3.

But before you settle down in front of your computer with a steaming mug of boiling caffeine solution, a word of warning: for some reason this is not a slickly edited promo video, but clearly some sort of B-roll footage that BMW has decided to unleash upon the world unedited.

This means that there's quite a lot of similar shots and odd, swooshy pans at the beginning. We suggest you jump straight to 5m 26s, where the action begins in earnest. Unless you're particularly interested in seeing the odd fascination the cameraman has with focussing on bits of pit lane rather than the cars...

At least...

Seems strange without some sort of constant background music or noise.

That E30, though dated does look edgy and sharp in the handling dept. That's the one for me.

that 1 series looks terrible - like something noddy would drive.

E30 is gorgeous though.

This is the strangest promotional video for a car i've ever seen... WTF is up with the cameraman? Porsche is best for these video's. :P

The 1 Series Looks Gash and the old saying "you cannot polish a turd" applies!

The reason I dislike the looks is because there is too much metal above the rear wheels which make it look too tall. I appreciate there maybe safety and practical reasons for this, but as a styling excercise it fails.

It makes the M3 look like a beauty queen and a bargain.

I started watching at 5:26 (thanks for the tip) and gave up at 10:28 when I heard an insect and then saw a bird flying across an empty sky. This must be the bits the cleaner stole off the cutting room floor.

The cold engine abuse is possibly a comment on how these cars are likely to be treated in the real world!

Looks like an e46 CSL that has been shrunk in the wash. Would need to see one in the flesh but from this vid and press shots it just doesnt look right.

The 1 looks HUGE and cumbersome compared the e30. I miss my e30 :-(

This looks like it's just some stock footage for car shows to use when they're not going to do a road test.

Personally I think it would look a lot better if they did a version with the hatch version. I think that it is a better looking car than the coupe which looks from the side profile to be a bit of a stumpy 3 series coupe. A 1 M hatch please BMW.
