Hello chaps,

I hope you're all well and ready for xmas!!! smile

I'm after a bit of advice for a friend of mine. He has a 2000 Ford Focus 1.8 TD estate and it is suffering from lack of power through the gears but most noticeably in 5th gear on the motorway. If he hits a hill power decreases to 60 and he sometimes has to change down a gear to 4th.

The car doesn't judder at all, its just lack of power. I initially thought it could be the turbo or a fuel blockage but I have no idea. He has taken it to a garage and they can't seem to find the cause of the problem.

Any ideas?

Airmass metering unit?
Don't know this specific engine, but sympthoms look like what I was experiencing on a turbo diesel.

Leak in the air pipes post turbo? I had a loose pipe that was leaking the pressurised air so had big power loss. That affected car in all gears though, so if its just 5th then may not be the reason.

Yes but it will be more noticeable in 5th due to less torque because of the ratio's.

I'd check the turbo pipes haven't come loose(as stated), EGR valve(stated),MAF(as stated)

One other thing, has it had a whack on the near side front? The injection management computer is in the nearside front bumper and is easily damaged.

first thing i would do is change fuel filer start there, sounds like fuel starvation or air getting into fuel lines deffo.
