Just moved into a house with only 75mm loft insulation and it is cold! I can't believe u can get rolls of insulation for £3 from N-power. I will be able to put 270mm on for about £70!

Questions are:

Is this good stuff?
Is it mineral fibre rather than glass?
I will be getting someone to fit it - woul companies supply and fit their own insulation cheaper than if u got the npower stuff and got somebody in to fit?
I don't plan on using the loft as storage space so will happily cross lay the insulation across the joists - if I ever have to temporarily compress the insulation with boards to allow me to work on underside of the roof will it ruin the insulation?

Cheers

You mean this offer ??

http://www.npower.com/web/diyloftinsulation

Had mine delivered yesterday with a choice of 100mm or 170mm. I went for the 170 as a top-up of what I already had. Looks good stuff to me.

They also give you a set of gloves, goggles and mask. At least its the best time of year to do it instead of a hot summer.

I had to chase Buildcenter up as they were a bit slow on delivery

I cconsidered doing it myself but for 150 can get it supplied and fitted. Seems worth it to get it done properly and without the itchiness!

After buying a load of this stuff when it was a quid a roll, and fitting it myself, I think torqueofthedevil has the right idea. Bloody horrible job, despite overalls/gloves/goggles/mask etc etc I still itched for 2 days afterwards! Pushing the stuff into the far corners of the loft under a sloping roof is a pain (it tends to fall to bits), and sawing the 100mm stuff to fit between the joists generates a horrendous amount of nasty fibrous dust.

Still, I did happen to over order on insulation and offloaded the surplus after the £1-a-roll offer expired for a tidy profit smile

When I say into the corners I don't mean RIGHT into the corners... we did leave a few inches gap for ventilation smile

It'll be perfectly good stuff - the apparently bargain price is like the fluorescent light bulbs for 50p - the power companies subsidise these products as part of their energy saving commitment - we're all paying for it through our energy bills.

Focus DIY are selling rolls of 100mm and 170mm Rockwool insulation for 3 pounds and 4 pounds.

Also most twice as cheap as the stuff is in Wickes at the moment.Wickes are selling the Rockwool at 7 pounds 50 at the moment.

Rockwool is very good insulation.

I just finished doing the loft with B&Q £3 a roll stuff. Its 200mm thick and fibreglass. It was really easy to put down and this is def a good time of year to lay it as its cold in the loft so you dont get all hot and bothered. Wear a long sleeve shirt and a breathing mask.

The house feels warmer but then the temp is higher outside...

You're still paying the subsidy through your energy bill, but if you insulate / use the bulbs you get some back through the subsidised glasswool cost and some through the small decrease in [the increase on!] your energy bill.
