Z4 as an occasional track car
Discussion
Hi all
I have been considering an elise/exige as a 2 seater I could take on a few trackdays, but have started to think it may be a bit to hardcore for everywhere else. Which brings me onto the Z4, does anyone track a 3.0si version? I imagine the brakes would need uprating and probably tyres replacing with some non run-flats (they seem a bit pricey to burn off in a couple of track days), but otherwise are they ok to take on a few track days a year?
Would the engine put up with the stresses and strains this would put on it, or would I be better off looking at something like an s2000?
The servicing costs on the Z4M and Boxsters are keeping me away from these

1) Why do you think few trackdays a year would be so devastating to your car? Just make sure everything is in good condition, change the rubber (ideally a spare set of some cheap 2nd hand wheels with R888s fitted, to use on trackdays), pads, brake fluid and oil to something better and you'll be fine.
2) Why S2000 should be happier on a trackday than a Z4?
I've had a great time as usual in my Z3M last Saturday at Bedford Autodrome, totally stock, only set of Mintex Pads, DOT 5.1 brake fluid and Bilsteins B8 and H&R springs fitted.

I had my 3.0si on the 'ring - it was awesome. As fast and more than I'm really capable of exploiting - fast enough to get you in serious trouble - but also very exploitable at the limit.
In the wet it was clearly more confidence inspiring than the 911's on track (I'm not saying better, or course not - but value for money etc) and I could push it without fearing losing control.
Yes you can get better, but it is a good all round car. Fast, properly every day usable and good handling (although much better on smooth surfaces than bumpy).
Underated by many - but that's their loss.

You think the Z4 is more stable on the track in the wet than a 911?911 sticks to the road like glue, corners really well. The Z4, with runflats in the wet, hard as nails and really backend happy. Without runflats, alot better, but you wouldn't push it hard in the wet like a 911, unless you want to see that backend go.
I have a Z4, and believe me, you don't drive it hard in the wet, without getting nervous.
Really surprised at the coment.
