Bottom ball joint

Hi All,

Just having a few hours on the S rebuild at work today, lets mock up the uprights and arms, Mmm bottom ball joint won't look at the brand new Sierra upright, anyone know just what size reamer I need to ream out the bottom housing taper??

Sounds a bit drastic, taper reamers aren't the kinda stuff most people have lying around ?

No doubt you know what you're doing but wouldn't just "cleaning" it out with emery cloth do it ? failing that I'd take some very careful measurements from the old one before setting about the new one with a reamer.

Got the last two from the search facility selecting PH search and advanced, then 'bottom Ball Joint' in the "Search for all of the words" box and selecting just the TVR S forum

Am I being thick? but none of the ball joints mentioned would fit a new Sierra hub with a small taper? would they? I have my old joint and the new one is identical and neither fit the new hub.

The funny lump sticking out of the top of it is the TVR modification to convert from McPherson strut to the SAAB top ball joint and I should NOT have removed it as it is tack welded in place before being bolted up



not a very good picture but I guess you are talking about the taper to the right? Unfortunatly I dont have the spare hubs any longer so cant take measurements etc but it might be worth ringing Adrian Venn of Exactly TVR in Coventry adrian@ on here, a fount of knowledge.

The bottom taper on the sierra upright is reamed out - I haven't looked at the links above which may have it covered but I can tell you a vanilla sierra upright doesn't fit.

Chris, what do you mean by 'Vanilla' upright?

I am struggling like hell to find a reamer, Adrian Venn thought he could help but the company he borrowed from before has gone bump!!

Should get the chassis done this week so need to crack on with the hubs

Sorry by vanilla I mean original ford spec upright - the bottom taper is not the standard ford one on the TVR but I don't know was it was changed to.
(Maybe the bottom balljoint spec would give a clue?)
The thread on the Griff forum didn't know either IIRC so probably not worth killing yourself trying to find it.

Well, given up trying to find a reamer, hubs are now at Radical Cars (Amicon Eng.) at Peterborough being machined to suit the bottom ball joint, not cheap but has to be done!
Hopefully back in my grubby little mits next Monday???

Front hubs are back from Radical Race Cars nicely machined and ready for fitting, all is well in the world again!! Just need the 2-1/4 OD tube to land and get the chassis done, taking forever!!!!
