Hi all,

Looking for some advice, been with my existing company for just over 2 years and went for a position as a manager in my line of work. Currently work as a Lead subject matter expert and have been picking up some of the management duties in absence of a manager.

Got turned down due to a preferential candidate, this was the only feedback I received. Announcement was made today has to who the person is, not happy as this individual has 6 months experience of this subject area. From what I have seen, said person has gotten this position by brown nosing. Process was rigged from the outset as the vancancy was only advertised for 4 working days which is not the norm.

I was hoping the process would have been fair, as only 2 people went for the position and only one person was interviewed. I would not have minded so much but the successful candidate comes to me for advice.

Cannot see any point in raising concerns to HR as the hiring manager is a senior and career here will go down the pan.

Thinking the only way to progress is to move on but do not want to do anything rash.

What advice do you guys have?

Learn from the experience.

Being good at your job is not necessarily enough for promotion.

Being a subject matter expert doesn't necessarily mean you're suitable for promotion. I reckon if you've got lots of experience in the area you're in than this person then you won't get offered promotion the next time it comes up, if it does.

If I thought I'd been looked over 1 on 1 against someone less qualified I wouldn't hang around.
