Hi all,

Its time for some new tyres. Currently have Eagle F1 GSD3s all round.

Any recommendations for what to replace them with?

What do you want ?
Good grip?
Long life?
Cheap to buy?

what do you use the car for?
fast road?
tracks days?
sprints?
shopping?

I have just put Dunlop SP sports on to replace michilins, but I have only driven it in snowy conditions since, so I cannot yet say what they are like?

The 5 is used for mainly for a weekend roof down hoon. I'm looking for something with good grip that isn't going to cost the earth. Within reason, I don't mind spending a bit more cash on good rubber.

I remember the difference when I replaced the Jap ditchfinders the car was imported on with the current tyres, like night and day!

If you can find any! The RS2 are being discontinued and the RS3 aren't being imported into this country!

Haha! I have T1Rs, I have not had too much trouble in this weather. Otherwise good tyres for the price. IMHO I'd stick with the Good Years, better all rounder grip wise & last a bit longer.

Uniroyal Rainsport 2s or Rain Experts for me, please. Really good all-rounders, sensible cost, good wear.

Thats interesting to hear that. I found the goodyears to be massively more softer on the sidewall and the general lifespan is shorter. I will say that during winter months they (toyos) are competant. Thats as about as much as i expect considering the wide range of conditions we british drivers have to contend with these days. During warmer months they can't be faulted to be honest!

I'll be sorely disappointed if i cant get any hancooks - i honestly believe they were the best possible all round tyre for use on occasional track sessions available.

Problem i have is my WiM alignment is doing a bloody good job of saving my tread. Will be some time before i need any rubber!

I do have a couple of track days in mind first part of the year so that may change biggrin

You have a good point here. I ran several consecutive sets of GY F1s when I had the R33 skyline(17"x45x255),& went through the 1st couple of sets in reeediculous time- all road, track stuff came later. I think 4k miles was the worst. I found them to be overly sensitive, wearwise, to tyre pressure. Once I'd found the psi sweet point they lasted pretty well.

Dont get me wrong they are a great tyre as far as outright grip is concerned, but in terms of longevity and feedback they just didnt hit the spot for me.

Thinking about this (and i dont know if they are even available in MX5 sizes) I also found the Falken 452 in 255/40/17 and 225/45/17 to be an excellent Goodyear rival having had them back to back. Again relatively soft but lasted a bit longer and had stiffer sidewalls.

Aren't 912's the comfort / low-noise one that Falken do? They're recommended for use on the Jag forum with the XJ8's for this very reason and I've a couple on the front of mine. Wouldn't really think they're the best option for an MX5, though I've been impressed iwth them so far.
