Me and the Bird are thinking about flying to Copenhagen, then training it along the Norwegian Coast towards the top, then back down through Sweden to Stockholm, where my brother and his wife live. Last two weeks in April.

Is anyone able to offer advice on our very loose plans? Don't really know what to see, where to go exactly and have no rigid structure in mind other than a vague plan.

Specifically after advice on:

1. Mosquitoes
2. Bikes on the train in Sweden
3. Cheap accommodation options

But all other advice gratefully received.

Cheers

Our budget when interrailing through Norway ten years ago was £15 a day. We ended up spending £20 on accommodation in Youth Hostels and having to camp when we got to Germany and France.

Its a good train journey though, but about halfway up the train line just stops and you have to get on a bus and a couple of ferries across fjords before rejoining the train again in Narvik to come back down through Sweden.

Plenty to do in Oslo but definitely not cheap.

On the way up we stayed in Lillehammer Youth Hostel one night which was very good, right above the train station. You can then have a look round the Olympic stuff and I am sure there are other things to do. Actually, I think it was there we went to the traditional village museum, all houses with grass roofs and the like.

Narvik itself has pretty much nothing going for it as far as we could tell. Its not unpleasant but it's nothing special either. It does however happen to be north of the Arctic Circle, which is why we went, and the end of the line for trains up from Sweden.

We came all the way from Narvik to Stockholm in one journey so not sure what there is to do en route.

2. Bikes on the train in Sweden, has links to pdfs of trains that take bikes all year round and those only in summer plus loading/unloadsing incructions.

Mossies take no prisoners, they even zone in while you are taking a leak... not funny.

Check the weather, you might be too early. Both times I have driven round those areas the roads weren't open until mid June. And some were still blocked even then.
