We have a Hotpoint Iced Diamond fridge of unknown vintage that came with the house we bought.

Now I maintain that on the control wheel in the fridge, the higher number means more refrigeration and thus lower temperature.

Am I right or is the number on the wheel (0-9) the actual temperature setting in deg C?

Agreed, though you could find out by turning it from 0 to 9 when not running and seeing if the compressor cut in. If it does it means 9 is colder.
