Good morning all,

My wife Mrs Boggy is in the market for a new car, she’s currently driving 58/2008 Vauxhall Corsa Diesel (brought new on PCP) £35 year tax and around 60 – 70mpg basically more or less free motoring, now we’ve been looking at a New Mini Cooper but she’s been on again about a Bmw, were looking for either a 118d M or a 116d M only, must be manual not Black. Anyone know of any good deal’s new or 2nd hand? No older than 2010/10 thou

dont believe the MPG claims! 55 tops realistically, unless you are on the motorway for 90% of your driving (at the speed limit or below).

A Sport will give you most of what you need on a 1 series without having to spend on an M Sport.

Heres a £199 deal on a 116i Sport? A 116d wont cost much more.

Don't believe the MPG claims, our 118d MSport which was an Efficient Dynamics model regularly achieved 42mpg, but never really went much above 45mpg even on a run. I also found it a touch gutless, in comparison our current MK4 GT TDi 130 would show it a clean pair of heels with ease, and it's better on fuel.

They are great cars to drive though, but crying out for a little bit more power

Why are you looking at the 116 and 118ds in particular?

Check out www.babybmw.net - a great resource for the 1er.

I used a new (900 miles loan car) manual 118d for two days, did 500 miles and averages 63 mpg ! The same style of driving in my 320d auto (177) gives me 48mpg.

Did you calculate the mpg or is that just what the computer said?

Go for an Msport if you can.

The Msport trim makes the car so much better though the seats arn't for everyone.

The look and feel of the M trim is great (especially the steering wheel) and the M suspension setup is excellent.

Wife had a 116d Msport. After 3 flywheels and clutches (dreaded clutch judder problem) the dealer swapped it out for a 120d Msport.

Calculated mpg for both cars was over 50mpg. The 120d has dropped under 50mpg in this cold weather.

116d was just that little underpowered especially compared to the 120d, but one day I drove from to Donegal and back from Belfast and managed 63mpg on the OBC.

I used to get 50+mpg from my pre-LCI 520D easily on a run, and mid 40s pottering about. This was brim to brim measuring. So getting 60+mpg from an ED vehicle that is lighter must be possible.

Just to add, I was lent a new 118d from BMW for a weekend (Fri~Mon), which was supplied with half a tank of fuel. realizing I would be doing @ 300~400 miles over the weekend I decided to top the tank up (My own car is a 328i sport so topping the tank up on this sort of weekend is a bit of a habit!).

I'm not sure what My MPG was over the weekend but I remember returning the car Monday morning wondering if the fuel gauge was stuck as it had hardly moved from full!.
