Which is the more desirable engine to have? I have previously only looked at the 3.0 cars but as I want a manual only in a very specific spec there are very few that come on the market in my price range anywhere close to where I live.

I've read that the 2.5 is actually better albeit less powerful than the 3.0 due to it being a much smoother engine. Is there any basis for this or is this just people justifying their 2.5 purchase.

We have a 3Lt Estate with all the bells and Whistles

OK it doesn't perform like the XKR I have but I still enjoy driving it

I thought both engines were identical except for the capacity. Anyway the 3.0 is a very smooth engine in my opinion and with 231bhp against 194bhp of the 2.5 the 3.0 would be my choice especially as fuel consumption is so similar.

3.0 is the way to go, don't settle for 2nd best. Def get the manual Sport.

In manual form I had the choice between a 2.5SE with a couple more toys and a 3.0SE.

I went 3.0 as I'd always wish I'd got the most powerful, laziest cruising engine. It's incredibly smooth and refined.

After my 540i it is not a disappontment in any way. I can get 35-36mpg on a run (even 37.5 on a 230 mile round trip a coujple of months ago).

Utterly love it. Great for pulling away on tickover in ice and snow too.

The performance of the 3.0 is better than the 2.5, but the MPG is about the same on both.

As for spec, the best is "Sport Premium" which temds to have the toys of the SE spec and the bigger wheels/dechromed finish of the Sport spec.

Most people say "go for the sport spec" but sport tends not to have parking sensors, cruise control and some other toys. I have found that Cruise control can save you LOADs of fuel on a run out but cruise is difficult to retro fit to a Sport. People think that the Sport cars will handle loads better than the SE cars, but the Sport suspension is only 15% stiffer, which is nothing really. SE also gets full leather seats where Sport is half leather half cloth. The performance/engine of the Sport 3.0 and SE 3.0 is the same.

The only thing I am not too keen on with the SE is the "Chrome" (coloured plastic) bumper inserts, but it is easy to swap these if you fancy it.

Sport models seemed to have keep fit rear windows when I was looking. Maybe newer ones are electric?

Plasti-Chrome is subjective. I like it on mine smile

Just drove it after a week in my Connect. Bliss biggrin

I have the 3 litre sport premium in manual and I love it. Ride a bit hard for me, but goes like a rocket (downside is it drinks like a fish- I got 30 on a long run, but usually 22 on the station run). Very good in the recent snow too. I can't fault it.

I bought a 5 speed manual 2.5 after driving 6 3.0 manuals. The 2.5 to my ears sounds less "thrashy" above 5k. I average 27mpg with mostly city driving with it. Towing a camper on a 300 mile highway trip at 70-80mph minus a ton of stop and go I got 30mpg. Sure the 3.0 does have a bit more punch. Not enough to make it worthwile in my opinion. The clutch is a bit too touchy to make the most of the power to begin with.
