I'm p/x'ing my car on Wednesday, and being charged £155 for a full 12 months tax on the new car. Is it acceptable for me to keep the tax disc from my current car, and claim back the un-used months?

Never done it before, but i've got 5 months outstanding on my current disc, which is approx £100 I can claim back.

I don't know much about it, but I don't see how they could possibly complain, if they're not providing tax on the new car.

I would remove it, but strictly speaking it depends whether they valued your car with or without the tax disc, doesn't it?

Unless included in the deal, and confirmed in writing, keep the tax disc otherwise dealer will just cash in themselves.
Remember it must be in the post before the end of the month for you to get a refund of the next full month. Post on 1st of month and you loose a months worth of tax refund.

The dealer can`t cash it in. Keep it and prepare for a possible argument or discuss it with them.

Good points all round. I presume the dealer can't cash it in because the DVLA will send payment to the name and address on the V5?

None of the cars on the dealers website are listed with any tax, so I think i'll be fine to keep it. The dealer has already said the car will be going on to his forecourt, so he'll sell a new 12 months tax to the new owner.

I would say it's best to remove it - if nothing else, cashing the tax makes it more difficult for the new owner to drive around uninsured (it won't help with ANPR, but the car will soon attract attention if parked up with no disc and I was recently told by a trader I was chatting to that it puts the scratters off if you sell without)

I'd take the tax disc out, dealers can't cash it in anyway.

If the tax disc was on the car when the dealer evaluated it then it should stay on the car.If your intention was to cash it then you should really have mentioned it before the dealer valued the car.

Unless stipulated when the deal was cut I've always removed the tax disc upon arriving at the dealer/garage to pick up my new car.

I have always been handed my tax disc on giving up a car on part ex. Was told that if new purchaser uses dealer's finance they add 12months tax to the finance amount and get a little bit more commission.

main dealer told me to remove it and cash it in as part-ex valuations were all done minus tax disc. (might make a difference if said garage was to put it on their own forecourt or just throw it into auction)

Ask the dealer, all of my order forms clearly state that the vehicle is priced 'as taxed' unless the customer specifically asks otherwise.

I've never left the tax on a car I've traded in, unless it's got less than a month to run.

I've had a refund on the past 3 car's tax discs I've traded in. They're no use to the dealer so get a refund on the remaining months. Even if it is just £30, it's almost half a tank of fuel.
