Just got COD BO for chrimbo: Tips?
Discussion
Everyone is different, but for a few bits of info...
- SMGs are much better in this game. Very accurate and powerful over short ranges. I suppose being a "Black Ops" game they wanted you to use the covert ops style weapons rather than bypass them as in the past. The MP5K with a red dot or reflex scope is one of the best weapons you can have in the single player game, particularly in veteran campaign. Very high rate of fire and incredibly accurate.
- under barrel grenade launcher does not seem to be so powerful now, has a pretty slow reload time now. I think I've only ever used it once or twice in veteran campaign, and never in multiplayer.
- Taking a launcher for second weapon in MP is a lot better than a pistol imo. I very rarely feel the need to go for a second weapon, particularly with the quick reload perk I use. Even Assault rifles can be reloaded very quickly. Having a launcher however is very handy, as soon as an enemy spyplane is in the air you can shoot it down very quickly. A quick and easy 150 points, and the enemy goes blind again. I shoot down at least one or two spyplanes in every game, which is a lot more use than I'd get out of a pistol.
- supersprint + long knife perk combo is out. Dual wield 1887s are out, dual wield Colt Pythons are in, but they aren't anywhere near as annoying as the problems plagueing the previous COD. The killstreak perks are a lot better now too, far more balanced. They give an advantage but they aren't game changers (or instant wins like the nukes...) so there is less incentive for players to cheat.

Shirley the Apple can't have fallen that far from the tree? with the winning format from MW where could they have gone wrong?
By managing to make it into WaW with AK47's. Lazy.
hing about BO just because you didn't like WAW is stupid. And you comment is BS too......the "AK47" wasn't in WAW, it's real life predecessor was though.
I love the way people act like MW2 wasn't a total mess! The most bland and forgettable campaign since MW1, loads of exploits for the MP, bloody nukes etc. Next year we'll be seeing threads like "I just got MW3, got any tips?" and then we'll get a dozen responses like "Trade it in for a preowned copy of Black Ops hur hur".
I like MW2, prefered COD4.
I was not a a big fan of WAW to be honest.
Black Op's is different, I like it, think it is really good game, I do not take games to seriously just for a bit fun at weekends, Black ops is perfect for this.
My tip is just go for it, give it some time and if you like it fair play to you, if not trade it for something else.

as above - couldn't stand WaW and MW was better than MW2 however COD BO is a good game in its own right. Ignore the campaign mode its a bit pointless - but the online mode is great - maps are larger than previously and not quite so many camping opportunities.
Can still be frustrating but I find the AK47u SMG and Commando Assault rifle the best 2 weapons to have. Agree on the launcher for the 2nd weapon too - just wish more players would pay attention to the opposition spy planes!

I've had it a few days now, and started playing on the SMG class. The Mp5K isn't a bad weapon to start with, but many friends advised me to use the FAMAS (available at Level 14) which so far I have found the most suitable weapon for myself. Seems fairly multi-purpose.
If you have been used to MW2, especially if you were a Commando Pro user - forget the knife. Its as good as useless compared to the Mw2 knifing system (not saying that was realistic in any way whatsoever!).
Also on BO you have to buy everything with CODPoints. It becomes clearer as you play a bit.
Sleight of Hand has changed class, which is good for me as I can now use Marathon too! The perks classes have been moved around a bit, and Create a Class is now somewhat different to MW2.
No shotguns as your second weapon, a lot of people are using Launchers in order to shoot down choppers/spy planes. I have rarely felt the need to change weapons so swapped out a pistol for the launcher in my main class.
You can now carry Claymores as well as grenades. Claymores come under an "equipment" section which hosts various different implements like jammers.
Voting in MP lobbies has changed too. You now vote to play the previous level, a pre-selected next level or for a "random" level. Seems to work quite well. A previous level can only be voted in once, so if you played Nuketown twice for example in the next lobby screen post match it would be unavailable to be voted in again.

Black Ops is a good game, people don't like it because it is a different style to MW2. The first thing I would do with online cash is buy perks, then attachments, then maybe a claymore and other bits and bobs. Pick up guns to try them out and see what you like, then buy what you like as you unlock it. Try and learn the maps as quickly as possible.
I haven't played online in over a week since my gold expired and I have not yet had a chance to renew it, but I'm level 30 or something now and I think I've only ever had one or two matches suffering from lag. A couple games where a new host was selected sure, and one game that jut closed and disconnected everyone immediately, but on the whole the MP is very stable.
If you use the default settings (connects to the most local games possible) and you have a good internet connection it should be pretty spot on.

Black Ops is a great game, shame every time any COD games come out people just want to knock them and say 'isn't as good as this' 'that was far better', they are all different, have different good points and all have some failings, remember the b
hing about MW2 with the campers / cheats etc.
My advice just enjoy it for what it is, if you find you arent enjoying it, then get rid of it, but give it a good go 1st.
