Hi

Our 30k mile 2002 1.6 Focus wagon that is always utterly reliable has suddenly developed a loose gear linkage feel.

It feels as though there is significant play in the linkage between the stick and the 'box.

Ive lifted the 'leatherette' gearstick cover and there is nothing obvious with the moving parts as far as I can see.

It feels as though the 2ns to 5th gears are very vague rather than obvious when moving round the box.

Anyone had this before?

Regards,

Neil.D

Are you sure it's the gear linkage and not the return spring? If the gear selector spring is worn, the stick won't return to centre position and just flap about.

Does it easily return to centre? My return spring went, cost £5 to fix and took 15 minutes.

Common problem on the IB5 (1.8 and smaller engines) box.

Rusted/snapped cables are common, changed a pair a few months back smile
the 2 10mm botls under the dash are a pain but doable without taking the dash out if you cut the carpet and sound deadening so it pulls out from under the dash wink

Very enlightening thanks.

The spring has snapped, Ive taken it out to take a look.

Ford parts department just are not open yet.

Advice very much appreciated, should be an easy cheap fix. Makes a nice change.

Thanks for all the quick and accurate responses.
